NL International Briefs

U.S. business use of VoIP increases to 12% in 2004
The use of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) by U.S. businesses increased to 12% in 2004 from 3% in 2003, according to research firm In-Stat/MDR. In-Stat/MDR is predicting that middle market penetration will be at 34% by year’s end, and at 43% in the large business segment. A recent study by In-Stat/MDR found that most firms will be using a mixture of voice communication services and technologies, not VoIP exclusively; vendors should not ignore small companies and develop tailored solutions for them; and businesses currently show a preference for VoIP deployment to have some LAN-based element, such as an IP PBX.

Simpler Networks has appointed Harry Carr as CEO, charged with establishing a U.S. headquarters. He will also be given a seat on the board of directors. Carr takes over the CEO role from Mike Perrault, who remains president, but takes on the added responsibility of COO. Prior to joining Simpler Networks, Carr served as chair and CEO of Tellium Inc. and a company, which merged with Zhone Technologies in November 2003. “Simpler Networks is at a critical juncture, as we set our sights on the next level of development. There is no doubt that the company is facing exciting opportunities, and together with the management team and employees, we hope to build the company’s infrastructure for long-term growth and success,” Carr said in a news release. The new CEO worked at Lucent Technologies, Yurie Systems Inc. and AT&T.

March Networks inks retail customer to major contract
Ottawa-based March Networks has scored a big contract win in the United States, inking a retail customer to a US$5.5-million contract. The identity of the U.S. client was not revealed. March will provide its digital video surveillance technology to help the customer reduce financial losses due to shrinkage or shoplifting. The contract calls for the supply of digital video recorders as well as system management software that links the surveillance system to a central network administered from a single location. Systems are expected to be installed by the end of January 2005. This is the second big win for the company, which inked a similar agreement with Fifth Third Bank of Cincinnati, Ohio. Financial details of the bank contract were not revealed last week, but it appears to be worth a substantial sum of money. Fifth Third Bank, which has 1,000 locations across eight states, will install a system in each location.
