Rainer Iraschko has been appointed VP of research at TRLabs, effective January 10, and will be based in Calgary. Iraschko joins the research outfit from Telus Corp. where he was part of the company's technology strategy team focused on optical transport. Iraschko's appointment comes as TRLabs undertakes a number of initiatives aimed at meeting the changing needs and new opportunities in the market. He will also play a critical leadership role and strive to provide intellectual property management adjustments, commercialization mechanisms and initiatives, and expansion of both subscribed and short-term technology development project activity.

Wireless carriers around the world are poised to generate a larger portion of their revenue from data services. A new whitepaper from Juniper Research, an edited excerpt of which appears below, suggests that mobile TV and mobile gambling will be boons to the wireless operators.

Blouin coy with analysts about expanding MTS Mobility beyond Manitoba

MTS Allstream Inc. president and CEO Pierre Blouin is all too familiar with the wireless market, having held the top job at Bell Mobility before joining the MTS near the end of 2005. So when analysts began questioning MTS about possibly becoming the country's fourth facilities-based national wireless carrier, Blouin was nothing but diplomatic.

Debbie Lawes – Co-Owner, Publisher, Managing Editor

An alumni of Carleton University’s master of journalism program, Debbie has worked as a professional journalist and editor for over 20 years. She started her career writing for suburban newspapers in Ottawa in the late 1980s and it was in 1992 that she began reporting on the Canadian communications industry as a writer for Evert Communications, founder of four of Tech Media Reports’ publications. While at Evert, she played a key role in launching three of those publications: Canadian Communications Reports (CCR), Report on Wireless (ROW) and Canadian New Media (CNM). Following Decima Research’s purchase of the publications in 2000, she joined Decima as publisher and managing editor. Debbie has also written extensively on research and development issues, as senior editor and later consulting editor of RE$EARCH MONEY, as editor of Canada Research Horizons and as president/owner of Dovercourt Editorial Services, an Ottawa-based communications company specializing in writing, editing and publishing newsletters, magazines and other communications vehicles.
