10 years and $50 million later, the Bell Fund is still going strong

With $50 million invested in over 500 new media projects associated with television productions, it's impossible for the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund to acknowledge every venture its had a hand in since its inception in October 1997. That's why for its 10th anniversary the fund today announced the selection of its Top 10 New Media Groundbreakers from the past decade, not only to take stock of the impact the Bell Fund has had in Canada, but also the impact those projects have had on the global industry.

Lucas tapped to head Dimension Data Canada

Wendy Lucas has been appointed area VP for the Canadian operations of Dimension Data. Darryl Wilson joins Lucas after being appointed regional practice director for the company's Canadian division. Lucas is based in Toronto and brings more than 15 years of sales and business development experience in the Canadian market.

Rogers Wireless makes big push for SMB market

The wireless arm of Rogers Communications Inc. has taken a big step towards getting a larger share of the small and medium sized business (SMB) market. The company announced on October 2 that it is going to be more aggressive in marketing the ability of Windows Mobile equipped devices to keep professionals connected while on the go. One of the more popular Windows Mobile devices, the MotoQ is now going to be available on the Rogers Wireless network, Motorola Canada announced on October 2. Rogers will also be offering the new Treo 750 as well as an upgrade to the HTC S621.

Dimension Data comes to Toronto

Dimension Data, an IT specialist and solutions providers, is expanding to Toronto, a move the company says will allow it to capitalize on a growing economy and robust commercial operations. The expansion into Canada is being driven by the rapid adoption of advanced technologies, including large and medium commercial businesses. Research from Datamonitor indicates that unified communications technologies are high on organizations' investment agendas and will be commonplace within the next two years. The research also found that companies increasingly understand the benefits of unified communications, such as improved employee productivity, customer service and cost savings.

Going nowhere fast: Investments in core infrastructure put pressure on services

The build-out in core infrastructure has put Canada at a crossroads. Fixed broadband penetration is high, and improvements are being made on the delivery of standardized compression and increased processing power. On the cellular front 4G, properly known as IMT-Advanced, is still a few years out, but 3G is delivering on some impressive speeds, and 3.5G and WiMAX are set to make things interesting. CTVglobemedia announces five appointments in TV division

As part of the strategic reorganization of its television division, CTVglobemedia has announced five key appointments. Susanne Boyce has been named president, creative, content and channels for CTV Inc. In her new role Boyce will lead all creative aspects of the conventional, specialty and digital platforms, except for sports. She will also oversee program development, production, programming, scheduling, branding and promotion, including creative collaboration with the sports group and on Olympic programming. Rick Brace will assume the role of president, revenue, business planning and sports for CTV Inc., where he will lead all aspects of the company's revenues streams and all business unit planning, as well as continue to oversee the sports group.

Tour guides may soon find themselves housed among museums' relics and treasures if Augmented Reality Experience (ARE) Mobile's Strata program catches on. Mobile-based and GPS-enabled, the interactive mediascape guides users through historical sites, cities, galleries or museums, accompanying them with narrated stories. It's a virtual tour guide that fits in the palm of your hand, Strata was one of several projects unveiled at last week's Canadian Film Centre (CFC)'s Media Lab Exhibition 2007.
