Editorial: I’m one of the people they’re talking about

Last night following the new episode of NBC's The Office, I, at the behest of my television set, logged on to DunderMifflinInfinity.com, which appears to be some kind of social networking website for fans of the show. I didn't stay long, but the mere fact that I went online to investigate complimentary TV content caused me to take a second and reflect on just how much things have changed.

As BDUs use competition from unregulated online content as a platform on which to call for lighter regulation and industry associations advocate for discussion of a national new media policy, the BDU proceeding figures to be a suitable warm-up for a more comprehensive new media review.

Telus reports solid subscriber and financial results

Telus Corp. continues to post solid financial and subscriber gains in its wireless business. The company added nearly 135,000 new wireless customers in the third quarter down slightly last year's quarter. Post-paid net additions were slightly more than 96,000, down nearly 10%. Pre-paid net additions were up 27% with the company adding 36,300 new pre-paid customers. The company now has 5.41 million wireless subscribers.

Rogers tops 7-million subscriber mark

The wireless operations of media and communications conglomerate Rogers Communications Inc. has surpassed seven million subscribers, following third -quarter net subscriber additions of more than 195,000. Driven by increased data usage of 53%, post-paid average revenue per user (ARPU) hit $75.15. Data now represents more than $10 on an average post-paid user's bill.

Bell Aliant releases Q3 results

Bell Aliant Regional Communications Income Fund posted solid Internet results in the third quarter, increasing by $5.5 million. The company's Internet subscriber base increased by 19% compared to last year's Q3. Bell Aliant is holding its own with respect to fighting decline in the legacy local line and long distance segments.

CTVgm’s got The BEAT

CTVglobemedia Inc. announced yesterday the completion of its purchase of the radio assets of Vancouver's The Beat Broadcasting Corp., which owns and operates the radio station CFBT-FM (The BEAT 94.5 FM). Launched in 2002, The BEAT is a contemporary hit radio station serving Vancouver's young adult audience. It ranks number one in its market in both the adult and females in the 18 to 34 demographic. CTVgm subsidiary CHUM Radio's existing roster of AM and FM stations in Vancouver includes Vancouver's choice for soft favourites 103.5 QM-FM, Vancouver's new talk CFUN 1410, and sports radio The TEAM 1040. "CFBT-FM is an important addition to our radio group," said Paul Ski, president of CHUM Radio, in a news release. "The BEAT 94.5 has been a great success with both listeners and advertisers and CHUM Radio plans to build on that success." The transaction was approved by the CRTC in early October.

The CTV-Rogers 2010/2012 Olympic consortium has announced two appointments to its team covering the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games. Rick Chisholm has been named executive VP of broadcasting and Alon Marcovici as VP of digital media and research.

Citytv officially a Rogers property

Rogers Media announced yesterday that its transaction to acquire Citytv officially closed. The Citytv network purchased by Rogers, which was effectively the remainder of CTVglobemedia Inc.'s acquisition of CHUM Ltd., includes stations in Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. In light of the announcement Rogers Media subsidiary Rogers Broadcasting takes immediate control of the Citytv operations under the direction of Leslie Sole, Rogers Media's CEO of television. "We are extremely pleased that we were able to close this transaction on schedule, allowing us to now proceed with managing these stations and expanding our broadcasting operations in these major markets," said Sole in a news release.

Wi-LAN launches massive patent infringement suit

Wi-LAN Inc. is upping the ante in its fight to get paid by companies that use its patents. The Ottawa-based company has initiated a massive patent infringement suit against 22 companies, including chip makers, equipment vendors and electronics retailers. The suit has been launched in the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division and is aimed at the following firms: Acer Inc., Apple Inc., Atheros Communications Inc., Belkin International Inc., Best Buy Co. Inc., Broadcom Corp., Buffalo Technology (USA) Inc., Circuit City Stores Inc., Dell Inc., D-Link Corp., Gateway Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Infineon Technologies AG, Intel Corp., Lenovo Group Ltd., Marvell Semiconductor Inc., Netgear Inc., Sony Corp., Texas Instruments Inc., Toshiba Corp., Westell Technologies Inc., and 2Wire Inc. Wi-ALN alleges these companies are infringing on patents or selling products using Wi-LAN patents relating to Wi-Fi and DSL power consumption.
