CTF needs separate funds and boards: Rogers

Forget about two funding streams; the Canadian Television Fund (CTF) should be split into two separate funds to achieve public policy and private sector goals, Rogers Communications Inc. told the CRTC this morning.

Redline has new VP

Redline Communications Group Inc. created the Broadband Wireless Infrastructure (BWI) business unit today and tapped Elik Jaeger to lead the BWI unit as VP. He joined Redline in late 2007 with more than 15 years experience the development and commercialization of products for major broadband wireless equipment manufacturers, including Alvarion and Motorola. Jaeger's international experience includes several years managing a multi-site operation in Bucharest developing WiMAX products, network management systems and other broadband wireless offerings.

Ignition Point names new CFO

Ignition Point Technologies Corp. has appointed Elena Kinakin as CFO, replacing Stephen Majlath who resigned to pursue other activities. She brings 20 years of finance experience, including senior positions at a range of private and publicly held companies. Telefonica completes testing of Nortel carrier Ethernet gear

The innovation arm of Telefonica Group has successfully completed tests on the performance and reliability of Nortel Networks Corp.'s Provider Backbone Bridges (PBB) and Provider Backbone Transport (PBT) carrier Ethernet solutions. The tests, which were conducted at Telefonica's lab in Madrid, involved using both products to support to support video and other high-bandwidth mobile data services.

More CTF money readily available

The Canadian Television Fund could be increased by $80 million simply by forcing BDUs to contribute the originally mandated 5% of revenues, the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) told the CRTC Monday as hearings into the CTF kicked off in Gatineau QC.

The Score to deliver sports news to Global News

Score Media Inc. announced beginning today its subsidiary, The Score Television Network, will provide sports updates to Global News Ontario's morning, noon, 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. "We cover sports like no one else and we are excited to reach out to a new audience through Global News Ontario," said David Errington, The Score's Executive VP and Co-COO. "We look forward to working with their team." The Score's coverage will include timely scores, odds, highlights, and breaking news, all with a strong focus on Toronto's teams. The broadcasts will also include The Score's sports ticker giving viewers up-to-the-minute scores and odds for all major sports.

Fight Network hires industry vets

The Fight Network has named Patrick Michaud and Paul Laberge CFO and COO, respectively. Michaud brings more than 30 years of accounting and financial management experience to the position. Most recently, he was executive VP and CFO at Score Media where he was responsible for all financial affairs of the company. At The Fight Network, Michaud will oversee all day-to-day financial operations including financial reporting, capitalization strategy and debt/equity financing, and taxation, and will provide strategic financial management and guidance to help the growing network.

Industry Canada adopting new band plan for 700 MHz

Industry Canada has kicked off a consultation to harmonize with the United States' critical narrowband communications spectrum in the 700 MHz band for public safety agencies. Harmonizing would cover the spectrum used to carry analog TV stations 64 and 69, complementing spectrum used for analog TV channels 63 and 68 already designated for public safety.
