BREAKING NEWS: CAIP loses first round of Bell throttling case

Small ISPs reselling Bell Canada‘s high-speed Internet service, under its Gateway Access Service (GAS) tariff, will have to live with the ILEC’s traffic shaping practices for the time being. The CRTC denied a request from the Canadian Association of Internet Providers (CAIP) to force Bell to immediately stop throttling the Internet traffic of its wholesale high-speed ISP customers.

Payment options expand for parking lot operators

Digital Payment Technologies Corp. (DPT) is ramping up its enterprise management services (EMS) system and electronic parking meters that give cities and parking lot operators the ticket to greater revenue and decreased operational costs. The Vancouver-based firm uses wireless technology to both link consumers to the payment mechanism as well give operators access to real-time parking information.

SIRIUS inks long-term agreement with Subaru

Satellite-radio provider SIRIUS Canada has announced that Subaru will offer SIRIUS Satellite Radio exclusively in the majority of its vehicles available in Canada. "Subaru’s decision to offer SIRIUS exclusively in the majority of its vehicles in Canada underscores SIRIUS’ superior content, broadcast coverage and business success to-date," said Mark Redmond, President and CEO, SIRIUS Canada Inc. "SIRIUS offers drivers an unrivalled in-vehicle entertainment experience with unique and exclusive content." Beginning in June, SIRIUS will be available exclusively for Subaru’s Legacy, Outback and Impreza models. Additional SIRIUS-exclusive Subaru models will be announced in the coming months.

CTV commits over $100k per year to NSI

CTVglobemedia has confirmed its commitment to the training of Canadian television writers and producers through a $650,000 commitment to the National Screen Institute (NSI) over five years. The contribution supports NSI Totally Television training, which was created through CTV and CTV-BCE Benefits in 2002. With this current extension of support, thanks to the CTV/CHUM Benefits, Canadian television writers and producers will continue to receive the training they need to take the next steps in their careers and to help advance their projects towards securing development and broadcast deals. "Over the years we’ve seen our support of NSI Totally Television pay huge dividends in the professional training provided to the next generation of television content creators,"  said Susanne Boyce, president, creative, content and channels, CTV Inc. "NSI graduates produce quality series concepts that have been developed and broadcast nationally, providing great Canadian programming."

Consumers Association objects to Telus telemarketing tariff application

The Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) is crying foul over an application from Telus Corp. that would allow the ILEC to call local customers with unpublished numbers to solicit for additional telecom services. PIAC, on behalf of the Consumers Association of Canada and the National Anti-Poverty Association, filed comments with the CRTC on an application from Telus seeking changes to the directory listing section of General Tariff (CRTC 21461).

Telus union reaches out with Web 2.0

George Doubt, president of the national Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU-STT Canada), recently announced the union’s launch of its own YouTube channel. RIM unveils Bold vision

Research in Motion Ltd. introduced its latest device, the BlackBerry Bold. It’s expected to be available from a wide range of carriers around the world. The handset comes equipped with support for tri-band HSDPA and the three flavours of Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g). It’s also a powerful device with a 624 MHz mobile processor that makes short work of downloading email attachments, streaming video or rendering web pages.
