New documentary fund launched

A new fund geared towards the production of documentaries in Western Canada has been launched by the Harold Greenberg Fund administered by Astral Media. Worth $585,000, the fund targets independent documentary film producers with a Western Canadian focus.

Atria extends reach in southern Ontario

Atria Networks LP has acquired the telecom assets of Peterborough Utilities, expanding its reach in southern Ontario. The purchase provides a critical link for markets in Eastern and Central Ontario and is a key part of a corporate strategy to join utility telecom networks across the entire province. Atria will connect Peterborough and surrounding areas to existing fibre infrastructure in Ottawa, York Region, Barrie, Hamilton and Waterloo-Wellington regions, providing businesses and public sector customers with seamless access to one of Ontario’s largest fibre-optic networks.

Robert Bouchard joins OmniGlobe board

Former Bell Canada International executive VP and COO Robert Bouchard has joined the board of directors of Montreal-based OmniGlobe Networks Inc., which delivers cellular, broadband, Internet and VoIP services globally. During his nearly 30 year career at Bell Canada and BCI, Bouchard held numerous managerial and executive positions in operations, customer services, and capital and expense portfolio management. While at BCI, he was instrumental in growing the cellular user base in South Korea and Taiwan from zero to 2.5 million subscribers in two years. He had similar success in Colombia, Brazil and Mexico and later negotiated the sale of BCI’s shares in Telecom Americas to America Movil, one of the largest corporations in Latin America.

Despite popularity, the Internet doesn’t trump traditional media

An increasing number of Canadians spend a lot of time online but not at the expense of traditional media, according to a report released today. Specifically, television viewing among Canadians has declined only slightly since 2004, although the decrease has been the same for Internet users and non-users.

Redline Communications has announced that the WiMAX Forum has certified its RedMax 4C mobile WiMAX, making it the first company to offer a complete line of WiMAX Forum certified products. Movieola picks up 8 million UK viewers; US and Caribbean markets next

The market for Canadian short films is about to get a lot bigger. Toronto-based Movieola, a small Toronto-based Category 2 digital channel, will now be available to eight million new subscribers following its majority purchase of PropellerTV, US/European-wide satellite channel distributed by British Sky Broadcasting Group. It also anticipates moves into the Caribbean market within a year and the United States within the next two years.
