Academia-industry partnership aims to boost mobile development

Several Ontario academic institutions and a number of wireless and content companies have banded together to form the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre (MEIC), an organization whose goal is to develop a centre of excellence for applied research, design and commercialization in Ontario’s mobile content and services sector.

OECD releases updated broadband figures, Canada remains in top 10

Statistics released this week by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) show that Canada remains in the top 10 for overall broadband subscriptions and penetration among OECD countries. The figures are as of June 2008.

Mobile advertising key part of Globalive’s wireless offering

Globalive Communications inked an agreement with MyScreen Mobile earlier this month that will see the upstart wireless carrier offer a variety of advertisements to subscribers at the end of calls and text messages. And the timing seems right. Not only is mobile advertising expected to hit US$20 billion within four years, according to figures from eMarketer, but established Canadian wireless carriers have been reluctant to embrace mobile advertising.

Drivers admit to talking while behind the wheel

Despite knowing the risks of using a cell phone while driving, many Canadians succumb to temptation: as 52 per cent of drivers who have cell phones admit to using them while behind the wheel, according to the results of a survey done by Ipsos Reid for RBC Insurance. The survey suggests that nine-in-ten Canadians drivers (86%) don’t
approve of using a cell phone when driving, but almost all drivers (95%) report having seen other people talking on cell phones while on the road.
