Bell Aliant expands fibre-to-the-home to Halifax

Bell Aliant announced plans Thursday to expand its fibre-to-the-home network to about 160,000 homes and businesses in the Halifax region. Bell Aliant and the Government of Nova Scotia are investing $55 million in the expansion, the company said in a release. The fibre-to-the-home network, which lays the foundation for Bell Aliant’s FibreOP service, was introduced last spring with a $15-million investment in services in Sydney, N.S. Thursday’s announcement brings the total fibre investment in Nova Scotia to more than $70 million, serving about 190,000 homes and businesses, the company said. "Giving our customers access to the most advanced technology available not only serves their communication needs today, but ensures they are ready for whatever the future holds. We know that the demand for bandwidth will only continue to grow, and we'll be ready,” Karen Sheriff, president and CEO of Bell Aliant, said in a release. The Nova Scotia provincial government contributed $2 million to the expansion. The company said its FibreOP Internet offers the fastest Internet available in Nova Scotia with a 170 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload service. FibreOP also provides a digital TV service, including HD channels. FibreOP will be available to customers in Halifax, Dartmouth, Eastern Passage, Cole Harbour, Sackville, Hammonds Plains, Waverley, Timberlea, Spryfield, Bedford, St. Margaret's Bay and Lake Echo in mid-2011, the release said. Customers in Sydney and Sydney River now have the fibre service, which will be followed by Glace Bay, North Sydney, Sydney Mines and New Waterford later this year. Bell Aliant said that by the end of 2012 it will have invested almost half a billion dollars to extend fibre to more than 600,000 homes and businesses in the areas we serve.
