RuralCom turns to Israeli provider for expanded coverage

RuralCom Corp., a Vancouver-based carrier operating a mobile network in parts of northern British Columbia and the Yukon, said Tuesday it has chosen Israeli-based Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. to be the prime contractor for a network expansion along the Alaska Highway. RuralCom said in a press release that Gilat will provide a technology called CellEdge 3G for satellite-based, high-speed mobile services that are intended to cover a 1,685-kilometre stretch of highway from Wonowon, B.C., to Beaver Creek, Yukon, which is near the U.S. border with Alaska.
