WorkdayTV teams with National PostMedia darling WorkdayTV.com has teamed with the National Post Online in a strategic alliance to integrate content and provide investors and viewers with breaking investment news. The arrangement will result in regular daily broadcasts on WorkdayTV.com from the National Post newsroom and the Post will feature a link to the Internet broadcaster. No details of the arrangement were disclosed. WorkdayTV has also created a new partnership with Fundlibrary.com, a subsidiary of StreetViews Inc. The new alliance will feature a segment on the Internet broadcast delivering real-time commentary on mutual fund investments and related topics. Frozen Goose up, up and awayThe Canadian Internet Broadcasting Network (CIBN) has launched a new news, entertainment and sports portal dubbed frozengoose.com. The site is made up of a number of areas of interest including content from the Arts & Entertainment (A&E) network. There are also links to chat rooms and message boards which encourage interactivity. CIBN is a Nepean ON-based developer of corporate web sites. Virtual Broadcast plays a doctor on televisionVirtual Broadcast Corp, Toronto, has launched a new Internet TV network dubbed Doctor TV. The virtual station streams orginal, short-format medical content on specific health topics. The site presents tips and demonstrations ranging from proper breastfeeding techniques to cosmetic surgical procedures. Over 15 programs have been produced by Doctor TV and future episodes are in development. Virtual Broadcast offers 20 other specialty networks through their portal, www.TVRadio.com. GlobalMedia.com and Prophecy Entertainment build film libraryGlobalMedia.com, Vancouver, is designing and developing an online storefront and media player for Prophecy Entertainment Inc which is distributing its library of film titles. Prophecy is GlobalMedia’s first Canadian customer. The site is expected to launch in October 2000. HRDC calls for proposalsHuman Resources Development Canada has called for proposals to fund new learning applications and technologies as part of its Office of Learning Technologies. The deadline for the competition is October 2, 2000, and proposals must focus on adult learners and meet specific program themes. Full details and criteria are available online. Salter Street creates scholarshipSalter Street Films Ltd, Halifax, is launching a new scholarship to benefit residents of Atlantic Canada who attend the film, television or new media programs at the Canadian FilmCentre. The funds will be handed out annually, in perpetuity, from a fund administered by the Ontario Arts Council Foundation. BC company guards children while surfing the ‘NetSafexplorer Software Corp, Vancouver, has launched Safexplorer, a new web browser which promises to protect children from pornography and predators. The company estimates that at least one quarter of kids online are stumbling across inappropriate content while surfing. The new browser incorporates word filtering or site blocking to screen for inappropriate words and materials, and the company employs educators and health professionals to review and categorize sites. Atlantic Canada getting wiredA new Corporate Research Associates Inc omnibus survey indicates that more than half of Atlantic Canadians now have a home computer – up 12 per cent from February 1998. Further, Internet penetration now stands at 37 per cent in the region, up from 20 per cent in February 1998. Forty-one per cent have made purchases on line. Significantly, 25 per cent who don’t own a computer are planning on buying one in the next year. WSi buys search ecom search engine firmWSi Interactive Corp, Vancouver, has acquired a controlling interest in iaNett.com Internet Technologies Inc, also of Vancouver. The company develops business to business search engine technology and turnkey ecom software. The search engines are based on a progressive parallel-computing infrastructure, capable of scaling to search over one billion documents in less than one second, according to WSi executives. ZipLink to provide connectivity for Interpass customersOttawa-based Interpass Net Technologies, a prepaid Internet access provider, has chosen ZipLink Inc, MA, to provide access for Interpass’ customers. ZipLink has developed a flexible infrastructure to allow electronic devices to connect to the Internet. Third president in six months takes reins of troubled IIMCReno Calabrigo, a venture capitalist with StarQuest Capital Corp, Toronto, has been appointed president and CEO of Nevada-registered Internet Multimedia Corp – the third president to hold the post in six months after taking over from Michael Walkirch who replaced Janet Winkler in late February. Calabrigo is a part-owner of Internet Multimedia with an undisclosed share of the company. The company owns SMC soundmusic.com Corp, Vancouver, an independent music download site – the calendar for which still lists events from last March at the latest. Calabrigo’s first priority, according to a July 5 press release, will be to raise additional funding, review the company’s investment in soundmusic, and move the company’s operations to Toronto. According to the company’s latest report, it lost $6.8 million through March 31, 2000, and has no working capital. "In light of (circumstances)," reads the report, "the ability of the Company to continue as a going concern is substantially in doubt." SMC currently has two employees who are revamping the site. United Way turns to web for new fundraisingSeptember 18 will mark the first-ever Ottawa-Carleton United Way "Webathon" which will raise funds through a series of Internet broadcast appeals. Epress.ca, AOL Canada, Canoe.ca and OttawaCitizen.com will profile United Way programs, agencies and giving inititives, interview volunteers, accept donations through a SSL back-end and broadcast live and pre-taped entertainment. Funcow to use Cinram sampling technologyFuncow.com Inc, a Toronto-based free Internet access provider will use software by Cinram International to let consumers sample additional computer software, games or music contained on the Funcow installation CD. Customers will be able to "unlock" the balance of the content by accessing an unlock code on the Internet. Standard Radio to stream nine stationsStandard Radio Inc will broadcast nine of its stations over the Internet using streaming technology from GlobalMedia.com, Vancouver. The stations include two each in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, as well as dial-stops in Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary.
