Microcell Telecommunications Inc has appointed Alain Rheaume president and CEO of its newly formed Microcell PCS company. The new business combines the operations of Microcell Connexions and Microcell Solutions. Rheaume was most recently executive VP and CFO of the company. The position of CFO will now be assumed by former VP finance Jacques Leduc . Mark McMillan has been named VP marketing for Sierra Wireless. Over a 15-year career, he has worked for British Telecom North America, Network Equipment Technologies and eSAT Inc. Sierra delivers wireless PC cards for laptops, wireless adapters for PDAs and OEM modules for embedded applications. Syscan International Inc has appointed Colin McLernon COO and Michael Murphy as CFO. McLernon, who joined the company last March, replaces Paul Bourgon. He will continue to head the fleet maintenance division as well as a sales division currently being established. Martin Aresenault , formerly VP sales and business development, has left Syscan. Gerry Pond is the incoming president of Aliant Telecom and of Aliant Emerging Business. He previously served as EVP at Aliant Inc and president of the Information Technology and Emerging Business units. He replaces Colin Latham, who is retiring. The company has named Jay Forbes EVP and CFO. He is a veteran of Oxford Properties Group, Nova Scotia Power Holdings Inc and Nova Scotia Power Inc. Flamboyant entrepreneur Michael Cowpland has become the majority shareholder in ZIM Technologies International Inc of Ottawa. He assumes the position of president/CEO. Cowpland recently resigned from the board of Corel Corp. Richard Evans is the new VP sales and marketing for Rodin Communications Corp. He most recently worked as director of sales (central region) for NEC Canada Business Communications. Nicholas Dowd is the new VP finance. The 15-year financial vet has experience in North America and Europe. The firm designs, integrates and sells mobile communications, telephone systems, computer networks, video conferencing, WANs and LANs, Internet and intranet, and VPNs. Barry Millman has been named director of marketing and sales for Finline Technologies Ltd of Waterloo ON. He has experience with Motorola, Siemens AG, Bosch Telecom, Telrad and Tadiran. He will be responsible for sales of broadband wireless. Finline designs and manufactures broadband wireless systems, emphasizing MMDS wireless cable solutions. The University of Alberta has appointed Norman Beaulieu as the first head of its Informatics Circle of Research Excellence (iCORE) wireless communications laboratory. He was previously associate head of electrical and computer engineering at Queen's University in Kingston. Joining him at iCORE are Witold Kryzmien and Ivan Fair , both from the department of electrical and computer engineering. Industry Canada has named the members of G8 Digital Opportunity Task Force. They are: Peter Harder, deputy minister of Industry Canada, Charles Sirois, president and CEO at Telesystem Ltd and Maureen O'Neil , president of the International Development Research Centre.
