Telesat Canada and TMI Communications have filed a review and vary (R&V) application with the CRTC asking that satellite carriers be exempt from the new telephone subsidy regime that came into effect Jan 1. While the two companies agree with the commission’s Decision 2000-745 to treat all telecom service providers equally, they say they should be excluded from the regime because of their track record in providing basic service to rural and remote Canada.
