Niv Fichman, founding partner of Toronto-based Rhombus Media; Denise Robert, president of Montreal-based Cinémaginaire Inc, and Tom Rowe, executive VP of creative affairs at Sextant Entertainment Group, were appointed joint chairs of the new Feature Film Advisory Group. Members of the group will be chosen from Canada’s producers, exhibitors, exhibitors, broadcasters, screenwriters, directors and performers. The group will advise Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps on policy issues on film matters, including monitoring the Feature Film Fund announced last year, and investigating all matters referred to it by the ministry or Telefilm Canada. Deborah Carver has been appointed general manager and VP of marketing for Salter Street Films Ltd’s Category 1 Independent Film Channel. She began her career at the Halifax-based company as director of business affairs at Salter Street Films International, and was later promoted to VP of communications. Sylvie Tremblay has been named director of acquisitions at TVA Group. Former MGM executive Greg Foster has been appointed to the newly created position of president of filmed entertainment at Toronto-based Imax Corp. Based at the company’s Santa Monica, CA office, he’s responsible for developing, producing and marketing large-format movies for Imax’s giant-screen cinemas. The new public relations officer at the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) is Micol Marotti. She was the manager of publicity for the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, served as media relations specialist for Sunlife Financial and was manager of publicity at Alliance Atlantis Communications’ television division. The Academy’s former box office coordinator Dave Miller has been appointed publicity coordinator. Chapters Inc has announced that producer Robert Lantos is joining its board of directors. He will serve on a special committee examining the planned merger with Indigo Books & Music Inc. Cathy Crockett is the new director of marketing and communications at British Columbia’s public educational television service, Knowledge Network . Thomas Flannery has been named director of business development at the Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN). Before joining the copyright collective, Flannery worked at Bombardier Aerospace. As well, Joel Grad has been appointed as CFO. He will oversee the organization’s financial management and information technology requirements. Grad joins SOCAN from Telemedia Communications Inc, where he was VP of finance and operations. Karla Bobadilla has left Arto-Pelli Motion Pictures to become director of business and legal affairs at Astral Media – The Harold Greenberg Fund. A founder of Vision TV and VP of new concept development at the specialty channel, Rita Deverell is taking a six-month sabbatical to be a senior resident of Massey College. She will be a visiting scholar at New York University’s department of Culture and Communication for two months. While in New York, she will also work on Vision TV’s shared content initiatives with the Wisdom Media Group. She hopes to finish her working sabbatical with a stint at the European Broadcasting Union. Brad Ballance has been appointed VP of sales at Toshiba Canada. He is responsible for the management, leadership and overall direction of the company’s sales initiatives. Canadian Heritage has appointed André Caron and Pierre Lessard to the board of trustees of the National Film Board for three-year terms. Caron, a professor at the Université of Montréal, has written numerous books and articles on the audiovisual industry. Lessard is a certified general accountant. Special Lifetime Achievement Awards will be given to Quebec film producer Rock Demers and Quebec television host and producer Bernard Pivot at the Banff Television Festival this June. Only two other such awards have been given out in the festival’s 22-year history.
