Nortel Networks Corp has appointed Lynton (Red) Wilson as the company’s non-executive chair of the board of directors. Wilson replaces Frank Carlucci who did not stand for re-election after having reached the retirement age. Carlucci had served in this capacity since March 2000. Wilson has been a director of the company since March 2000 and of Nortel Networks Ltd since 1991. He is chair of the board of directors of CAE Inc. Wilson had also worked at BCE Inc where he once served as chair and CEO. He is also a director of DailmerChrysler AG, Imperial Oil Ltd and Ontario Power Generation Inc. Nortel has also appointed Anil Khatod to the newly created position of chief marketing and strategy officer. He is now accountable for the company’s business and technology strategies, end-to-end solutions architecture and global marketing and communications, among other duties. He was previously president of Nortel’s global Internet solutions team and held senior positions in the company’s optical, personal and wireless Internet businesses. John Keating, president of COM DEV International Ltd’s Space division, has been appointed COO of the company. In his new role, he will be responsible for all COM DEV operations including space and wireless component, M/ERGY and wireless systems. Keating will also be responsible for all associated support functions, except corporate finance, R&D, and communications. The CANARIE IWAY awards were held last week and announced its five winners. Foreign Affairs minister John Manley won the public leadership award for his work in promoting the development of Canadian advanced Internet technology during his tenure as Industry minister. Other winners include John Demco, computing facilities manager at the University of British Columbia, for Community Service and Robert Proulx, VP IMS Experts-Conseils Inc for Application of Technology category. The new technology development award went to Deepak Wanner, president at Precidia Technologies Inc, and Maureen Cubberley, chair of CIRA won for public leadership. Canada Payphone Corp has appointed Bruce Hill as national sales director. He will oversee a recruitment drive aimed at establishing a national sales force. Hill brings more than 25 years of telecommunications experience to the table both as an executive as an entrepreneur. SiGe Semiconductor has made two major appointments to its board of directors: Denis Colbourne and Michael Cohen. Currently Colbourne is president at DC Technologies and brings more than 30 years experience to the company. Prior to founding DC Technologies, he was a former VP and GM at Nortel Semiconductor. He was also chair of Shanghai-Nortel and VP of strategic business alliances for Nortel’s advanced components business unit. Other posts occupied at Nortel were GM of the company’s IC wafer fabrication facility in San Diego and VP of supply management. He sits on the board of several Ottawa-based high-tech companies. Cohen, who has more than 14 years experience in the venture capital business, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions, is currently employed with VenGrowth Capital. He also sits on the boards of several high-tech companies including Tundra Semiconductor and Oasis Technology. Wireless Communications Association International has elected seven new board members and Jacques Paquin, president and COO at Inukshuk Internet Inc is among them. Other recent appointees include: Jai Bhagat, chair and CEO at AIR2LAN Inc, David Gibbons, VP and chief architect fixed wireless at AT&T Fixed Wireless Services Inc, Peter Howley, CEO and co-founder of IPWireless Inc, Curtis Henderson, senior VP and general counsel, Nucentrix Broadband Networks Inc, Rick Lawrence, VP broadband wireless access at MSI Inc, and John Ramsey, VP of South American sales, Vyyo Inc. ASG has appointed Michael O’Brien as its VP engineering. He will be based out of the company’s Raleigh NC office and will be responsible for managing product development, quality assurance and delivery objectives for ASG’s Passwerks product. He brings more than 20 years of telecommunications engineering experience to the table. Frank Fagan, president of Aliant Telecom Wireless Services, is now president-elect of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He will officially begin his two-year term on July 1. Fagan has been a professional in the telecom industry since 1962. During this time, he held a variety of senior level positions in customer services, operations, marketing, and human resources. Charles White has been appointed chair of the board of directors at Aliant Inc at the company’s recent AGM, succeeding Lino Celeste. Shareholders also elected three new directors to the board: Gary Davis, Margot Northey and Catherine Tait. The board now consists of 16 members. White is a senior partner with St. John’s law firm White, Ottenheimer & Baker as well as chair and trustee of BMO Mutual Funds. He is also a director of several other Canadian firms. Previously, White served as chair of NewTel Enterprises. AT&T Canada has appointed two new executives to its team. Stewart Berry will take over as executive VP marketing and will be responsible for all aspects of channel marketing, product development, product management, branding, advertising and promotion. He has more than 27 years experience in marketing and sales in domestic and international telecommunications for both emerging and established telecom players. Most recently, Berry was executive VP of marketing and sales at BCI Commcor, a division of Bell Canada International. He was the founder of New Zealand’s first CLEC, Clear Communications. Henry Yip joins the firm as executive VP network services where he will lead all network operations, including technology direction, network planning and services and support for customers. Gerald Chew has been appointed president and COO at MDSI Mobile Data Solutions Inc, Vancouver. He replaces Robert Cruikshank, who has resigned to pursue other opportunities. Cruikshank has also resigned his position on the company’s board of directors. Cruikshank had held the second highest post within the firm from February 1999 and was a board member since last March. Chew has been an important advisor to the senior management of the firm for the past four months. He has extensive senior level experience in operations management, strategic planning, turnaround situations and mergers and acquisitions. The majority of his experience is in the broadband and telecommunications industries. Chew says that the company has to do a better job at delivering its products on time to customers and take advantage of the company’s leading position within the marketplace. Federal Communications Commissioner, Susan Ness has announced that she will resign her post with the FCC on June 1.
