AT&T Canada has two new faces in the executive suite. Stewart Berry is now EVP marketing, after a long career at such places as BCI Commcor, New Zealand CLEC Clear Communications, NBTel, Telecom Canada and Bell Canada. The new EVP network services is Henry Yip. He previously worked at Telus, Jones Lightwave Ltd, and Bell Canada. Ken Keesey is the new VP sales for SaskTel. Most recently GM customer services, he will be based in the provincial telco’s Saskatoon office. Former Ontario treasurer Ernie Eves has been elected to the board of directors of BCE Emergis Inc. He resigned from the provincial government earlier this year. Canada Payphone Corp of Vancouver has made a few changes. Norman Osatuik is now president/CEO. He previously worked at BC Telecom, AGT, Nortel Networks, and Telecom Training Corp. Bruce Hill is the new national sales director. He has experience at Microtel Ltd, Manitoba Tel and Nortel. William Conner is the new president/CEO of Entrust Technologies Inc. He comes to the company from Nortel, where he was president of eBusiness solutions. He replaces David Thompson and Alberto Yepez who were interim co-CEOs. Nortel Networks has appointed Anil Khatod to a new position of chief marketing and strategy officer. He is the former president of the firm’s global Internet solutions team. Joseph Davis is being promoted from president of commercial markets for eBusiness solutions to president of the entire section. He replaces William Conner. Andrew Kwok is now VP and managing director for the Asia Pacific area of Teleglobe. He has been with the carrier since 1997, most recently as managing director for Hong Kong, Macau, the Philippines and Taiwan and has experience at MCI and Cable & Wireless. Don Smith is the new CEO of Mitel Networks in Ottawa. He most recently served as president of the optical Internet solutions group at Nortel Networks. Nelson Gentiletti has been named CFO of BCE Emergis. The accounting executive takes over from Donald MacKeigan, who has left the telecom firm to pursue other challenges. Ignition Point Technologies Corp, the former TeleLink Communications Corp, has named Peter van der Gracht president/CEO. The veteran of Nexus, Imedia Corp and Wavemakers Inc replaces Michael Cytrynbaum, who will continue as chair of the board. Susan Ness has submitted her resignation from the Federal Communications Commission in Washington DC. Ness, who has been a commissioner for seven years, will finish her term by June 1. The 2001 CANARIE IWAY Awards were handed out in Vancouver late last month. The public leadership prize went to foreign affairs minister John Manley; the community service award was given to the Media Awareness Network of Ottawa and to John Demco of the University of British Columbia; Robert Proulx of IMS experts-conseils Inc was awarded the application of technology prize; and the new technology development award went to Randall Gibson and Farhad Shafai of Ottawa’s SiberCore Technologies. Frank Fagan, president of Aliant Telecom Wireless Services, is the new president of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He will serve a two-year term as head of the volunteer organization. The annual Top 40 under 40 awards have been presented to young business people. Among the high tech names on the list are Helena Cain of Aliant Telecom, Darren Entwistle of Telus Corp, Marc Tellier of Sympatico-Lycos Inc, Richard O’Connor of Tundra Semiconductor Corp, Cindy Burton of iWave.com Inc, and François Rainville of Elix Inc. Among the six winners of the 2001 Manitoba Quality Awards were two firms with telecom connections. Superior Essex supplies copper cable to telecoms in western Canada, while The Faneuil Group is a call centre that provides teleservice and marketing for North American customers.
