Norigen Communications Group Inc has named Peter Green interim chair/CEO. He replaces Saied Nadjafi. President/COO Bill Baines and corporate communications director Eva Innes have also departed. Charles Abbe has retired as president/COO of JDS Uniphase Corp. CEO/co-chair Josef Straus will assume the presidency while Gregory Dougherty becomes EVP/COO. The other co-chair, Don Scifres, takes on the responsibilities of chief strategy officer. Zarlink Semiconductor has added two new overseas positions. Roland Andersson, a veteran of National Semiconductor, Siemens, Beckman Instrument and General Instrument, is the senior VP of worldwide sales located in Sweden. Sunny Aurora will work out of Singapore as VP sales/GM Asia Pacific. He has experience with National Semiconductor and EL Tech Research. Kevin Shea has joined Bell Globemedia Inc as EVP convergence. He previously worked at Global TV, Atlantis Communications and Rogers Cablesystems. CANARIE Inc has appointed Doug Hull as senior director, public access and learning networks. He takes up this new position after leaving Industry Canada’s information highway applications branch, where he was director general. Steve Wood has been named president of Nortel Networks Australia and New Zealand. The Bay Networks and Alteon WebSystems alumnus replaces Reg Bird, who is retiring and returning to Canada. Sigma Systems Group has appointed Stephen Nicolle as president/CEO. He worked at Nortel Networks, most recently as president of its service provider group. Bruce Gregory has joined Kodiak Venture Partners as venture partner. The past president/CEO of Extreme Packet Devices Inc will be responsible for supporting current investments in Ottawa and seeking new opportunities. Red River College in Winnipeg has honoured one of its graduates, MTS Advanced Inc president/COO Jeff Rohne, with an honourary diploma. He has more than 30 years experience in telecom, including stints with MTS and Bell Intrigna. The recent GlobeTech conference sponsored by the CATA Alliance saw several individuals and companies winning awards. Jan Jakubczyk, the president/CEO of Optiwave Corp, received the private sector leadership award, while the public sector prize went to Alberta premier Ralph Klein. Sierra Wireless Inc garnered the outstanding product achievement award, with the emerging technology citation going to Hyperchip, which recently won a Hot Start-Up Award from Telecommunications magazine. Paul Brant of CJOH-TV was recognized for excellence in science and technology reporting. Four scholarships were also handed out. The telecom prize went to Gordon Morrison of McMaster University for his work on DFB semiconductor lasers. Other awards went to Aleksander Czekanski of the University of Toronto (computing science/software engineering), Barbara Djurfors of the University of Alberta (electronics/advanced manufacturing) and Ziad Hafed of McGill (aerospace). Several changes have been made at the Federal Communications Commission in Washington. Jeffrey Carlisle is now senior deputy chief at the common carrier bureau; Barbara Esbin is associate chief of the cable services bureau; while Thomas Horan is the new senior legal advisor in the cable services bureau, replacing Clint Odom. Scott Ludwikowski is stepping down as assistant moderator of the Industry Numbering Committee in Washington. The move is necessitated by his departure from Sprint PCS in the United States. Debbie Lawes is stepping down as publisher and managing editor of Decima Publishing to launch her own editorial services company. Lawes has been associated with the Decima publications since 1992. During her tenure as a journalist and later as senior editor, she helped launch Canadian Communications Reports (1993), Report on Wireless (1997) and Canadian NEW MEDIA (1998). She will continue to work with Decima as a consultant and editorial advisor. Succeeding her as publisher will be Mario Mota, who has been working at the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. Prior to joining the CAB, Mota was editor of Canadian Communications Reports.
