Vidéotron ltée president and COO Guy Beauchamp has left the company. Pierre Karl Péladeau, president and CEO of parent company Quebecor Media, will serve as interim president of Vidéotron. As well, Serge Gouin has been named Vidéotron chair and heads a selection committee looking for a permanent replacement. Gouin was president and COO of Vidéotron from 1991 to 1996, and the trustee of Vidéotron from October 2000 until May 23, the date the CRTC approved Quebecor’s takeover of Vidéotron. Carole Taylor has been named chair of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. She began her 20-year career in the broadcast industry as a teenager working for CTV Inc’s After Four show. She also hosted Canada AM and W5, and served on the board of Rogers Cable. She replaces former chair Guylaine Saucier, who stepped down from the public broadcaster on Dec. 8, three months before her term ended. Chum Ltd television veteran Ian MacLean has been appointed VP of the Media Experts iTV lab, which was created in November 2000 to explore interactive television, particularly its impact on advertising. CRTC commissioner Jean-Marc Demers has had his term extended for a further three years, effective Nov. 1. As well, the term of commissioner Andrée Wylie has been renewed for another three years, effective Aug. 31. She is vice chair of the CRTC. François Macerola has been named chair of Telefilm Canada. He replaces Laurier LaPierre, who resigned after he was appointed to the Senate. Macerola was executive director of the film and television funding agency. Johanne St-Arnauld has been named acting executive director. An employee of Telefilm Canada since 1988, St-Arnauld was named director of international relations in March 2000. As well, Elizabeth Friesen has been appointed acting director of the agency’s Canadian operations. Previously, she was director of the western region. Marty Hasselbach has been hired as managing director of the Vancouver Film School. At the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, Sandra Graham has been promoted from VP to senior VP of public affairs, David Goldstein from director to VP of government relations, Sylvie Bissonnette from director to VP of finance and administration, and Kelly Beaton from director to VP of communications. Publicist Michael Buzzell has left the CAB after almost 13 years. Brian Hetherman has been appointed executive director of the Radio Starmaker Fund, effective Aug. 1. He was the director of A&R for Universal Music and the head of MCA Publishing. Peter Classon is no longer president of Cancom and Star Choice Communications Inc. He will, however, be consulting on special projects for Cancom. David Lewis, Bruce Barr and Wendy Herman have all left Star Choice. Lewis was VP and chief technology officer, Barr was VP of residential services, and Herman was VP of marketing and promotion. Brad Shaw is now senior VP of operations at Star Choice. Joining Star Choice are Jennifer McDonald as senior director of affiliate relations, and Valerie Strike as legal counsel. Previously, McDonald was Shaw Communications’ director of planning, and Strike was legal counsel at Shaw. At Cancom, Don Fletcher, previously VP of technical services, is now VP of engineering and operations. Mark Lewis, former senior legal counsel at Chum Ltd’s CityTV, has joined the legal firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Toronto. Lori Rosenberg has been appointed VP and general manager of Corus Entertainment Inc’s digital specialty channels, Scream and Edge TV. She was director of programming at CHCH TV in Hamilton and once was director of programming for Alliance Atlantis Communications’ Showcase and History Television channels. Scream is a partnership between Corus and Alliance Atlantis. As well, Darryl Wiggins was named program director of Scream and assistant program director of Edge TV. Ted Kennedy, currently program director for CMT and DMX Music, takes on the additional duties of Edge TV program director. Heather Conway, formerly executive VP of corporate and public affairs at TD Bank Financial Group, joins Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc as executive VP of corporate communications. Sextant Entertainment Group Inc has appointed Peter von Gal, executive VP and COO of New York-based Hallmark Entertainment, and Thomas Hoberman, a lawyer at Los Angeles-based Hansen Jacobson Teller Hoberman and Warren, to its board of directors. Radio broadcaster John Hayes has been appointed president of Corus Radio. He replaces Terry Strain, who is retiring but will continue on as a consultant. Madeline Ziniak has been upped to VP and station manager of multilingual television for eastern Canada at Rogers Media. She maintains her responsibility as executive producer of ethnic productions. Télé-Québec president and director Doris Girard moves over to Quebec’s Culture and Communications department as deputy minister. Girard, who once headed the French program at the National Film Board, replaces Adelard Guillemette. Guillemette is retiring. Dwayne Desaulniers has been named the director of business development at wire service Canadian Press. He was general manager of development projects at Rogers iMedia. At Cogeco Cable Inc, Jacques Begin has been named VP of special projects, and Jules Grenier has been appointed VP and general manager of the cableco’s Quebec division. Lori Assheton-Smith has been named general counsel at the Canadian Cable Television Association. She is responsible for all legal matters at the association. She retains her responsibilities as VP of new media. Michael Hennessy has been named senior VP of policy and regulatory affairs. The appointments resulted from a restructuring at the CCTA. Shaun Purdue, currently COO of PrideVision, has been appointed executive VP and CFO of the digital specialty channel’s owner Headline Media Group Inc. He will continue to oversee the launch of PrideVision. Robert Malcolmson, currently senior VP of Headline Media, has been named president. He will be responsible for overseeing the company’s three operating divisions: The Score Television Network, St. Clair Group Investements Inc and PrideVision. J. Thomas Murray, VP and COO of the Score Television Network and president and CEO of St. Clair Group, exits the company. Edward Hannah, senior VP of Headline Media, left for a senior management position at another company. Leanne Bate has been appointed interim president and CEO of Medbroadcast Corp. Ian Hand has been named non-executive chair of the board. As well, Rashid Aziz and Robert W. King, president of King Pacific Capital Corp, were named to the board. Greg Walling of Cabletel Communications Corp and Doug Young of Oshawa-based Cygnal Technologies Corp are among the nominees for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the year in the technology and communications field for the province of Ontario.
