John Riley has been named president of Astral Media’s Astral Television Networks (ATN) group. He has worked for 13 years with Astral Media, most recently as head of the Teletoon English and French networks. He will be responsible for the operations of ATN’s five pay and pay-per-view services, The Movie Network, Moviepix, Viewer’s Choice, Super Ecran and Canal Indigo. Paul Lamontagne has been appointed president of Look Communications Inc. He’s responsible for planning and implementing the re-launch of the company’s activities and its ongoing operations. He was executive VP and COO of Look’s Quebec and eastern Ontario region when the company launched in 1998. Global Television has appointed Adam Ivers as VP of programming, Anne Marie Varner as director of Canadian production, specialty, and Don Gaudet as program manager of specialty services. Ivers is responsible for programming, acquisitions and planning and scheduling programming for Global’s specialty channels. Janet Callaghan, who was hired in January as senior VP of integrated marketing at Bell Globemedia, has not had her contract renewed. She was charged with starting cross-promotional opportunities that would link the company’s multimedia operations, including CTV Inc, the Sympatico-Lycos Internet portal and The Globe and Mail. She will continue to do consulting work for Bell GlobeMedia. Diane Quinn has been appointed the new executive director of Women in Film and Television, Toronto, a non-profit professional organization founded in 1984 that helps women build, advance and sustain careers in screen-based media industries. Gaston Germain has been named VP of international development of the new joint venture Cogeco/SNC-Lavalin Broadband International. Germain has more than 20 years of experience as operator, shareholder or consultant in the field of communications networks and services around the world. Peter Leach, president and CEO of Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO), is stepping down Oct. 10. Ben Minbashian has been appointed VP of development at VerticalScope Inc, while Peter O’Neill has been named VP sales. Minbashian will oversee the creation and enhancement of the company’s proprietary technology. Prior to joining VerticalScope, he was senior project consultant at ORGANIC Inc where he developed software for the web sites of Chrysler Financial and eHarlequin. O’Neill will be responsible for guiding the company’s brand and revenue base. He has more than 25 years experience in sales and marketing with WIC and Alliance Communications - Showcase Television and History Television. Irshad Manji has been hired as executive producer at Vision TV’s new Category 1 One: The Body, Mind & Spirit specialty channel. She will be responsible for forging partnerships with sponsors, broadcasters and other organizations in the fields of health, personal growth and living a planet-friendly lifestyle. Bill Durnan will oversee the revamping of the Toronto office of Cossette Communications Group. Philip Donne, president Cossette Toronto and co-president of Cossette Montreal, has left the company. Alison Clayton is general manager of the new specialty channels Biography, TechTV and MSNBC. As well, David Heath is director of programming, and Melanie Farrell is director of sales.
