Michel Beland has been appointed CFO of Toronto-based Microforum Inc. Beland is an experienced chartered accountant with more than 20 years of management and financial experience. He joins from a San Diego-based technology company where he served as executive VP, COO and CFO. He has previously worked as a senior VP and CFO with Rogers AT&T Wireless (ROW, Dec. 20/99), and executive VP/CFO and treasurer with Softkey Software products. A new Government On-Line advisory panel has been announced by the Treasury Board. Guy Savard, vice-chair of the board and chair of the board for Quebec operations at Merrill Lynch Canada, and Barbara Stymiest, president and CEO of the Toronto Stock Exchange, will co-chair the panel. Other members include a roster of familiar faces from across the spectrum of academia and the private sector. Cell-Loc Inc’s CFO, Jim Hill, has resigned. His duties will be assumed by current management. His retirement comes just nine months after his December 2000 appointment. Rob Bruce will assume the newly-created position of EVP, chief marketing officer of Rogers AT&T Wireless and will also hold the title of president, wireless data services. Bruce was most recently SVP of marketing at BCE Mobile Communications, and has also held senior marketing and operating roles at Oshawa Foods Ltd, Pepsi-Cola Canada Beverages Inc and Warner Lambert. Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO) has announced that Darin Graham will take over as president from Peter Leach. Prior to joining CITO, Graham was director of R&D for ADT Security Services, Florida, and has worked for a number of other research-oriented firms. Leach tells Report on Wireless that the appointment marks a rare occasion when a Centre of Excellence has appointed a president from within the organization. For his part, Leach says he will embark on a number of consulting projects, including sitting on the advisory board of a new ICT venture capital fund still in the early stages of development. Calgary-based Wmode Inc has hired Charles Napier as SVP of U.S. operations. Napier was previously product manager at Amazon.com, and has also served as VP of marketing and business development at Convergence Corp. The Federal Communications Commission’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau has appointed Roger Noel as deputy chief of the its Commercial Wireless Division. Also at the bureau, Scott Delacourt and Barry Ohlson have been hired as legal advisors. David Fleming has been appointed VP of product development at World Gaming plc, London. Fleming has previously worked at IronLion Management Inc after a two-year stint at White Picket Defenses Inc. Fleming will be based in Vancouver. Zi Corp, Calgary, has made two senior appointments. Andrew Nevin has been tapped as the company’s new COO, and Helen Chen has been named VP of project development for the company’s Oztime initiative. Nevin has experience with the company’s prime China market from previous work with marchFirst and as senior VP and managing director for TD Waterhouse, Asia Pacific Region.
