David Colville has had his term as chair of the CRTC extended by Cabinet. He has been acting in the role since Françoise Bertrand left (NL, Feb. 12/01). He has indicated he does not want the position permanently. Bell Canada has made a series of changes in the executive suites. Guy Marier is the new EVP customer service and productivity improvement. He assumes this role while maintaining his positions as chair of the boards of Télébec, Northern Telephone and Connexim. His previous job as president of Bell Québec goes to Josée Goulet. She relinquishes her position as president of Bell ActiMedia to Marc Tellier. Tellier was formerly SVP partnership development at Bell and president of Sympatico-Lycos. They’ve busted the glass ceiling at Bell Intrigna. Cheryl Barker, who had been interim president/CEO of the CLEC (NL, Sept. 11/01), assumes the position full time and also adds the title of chair. She succeeds Bill Fraser, president/CEO of Manitoba Telecom Services Inc., in the last role. Before landing at Intrigna, Barker was CFO/EVP finance at MTS. Joining her at the MTS-Bell Canada company is COO Louise Villeneuve. The 20-year Bell veteran served most recently as VP public access & home services for the central Canadian telco. Wayne Demkey replaces Barker as CFO/VP finance at MTS. He had been corporate controller for the provincial telco. Mark Burton is heading the business law and technology transactions division of the Stikeman Elliot law firm. The former president/CEO of Digital Processing Systems Inc. will be based in Ottawa. Communications Information and Technology Ontario has appointed a new board of directors. Named to the board are Suhaya Abu-Hakima of AmikaNow!; Rafik Goubran of Carleton University; Yaacov Mutnikas from Algorithmics; Jim Roberts of Dalsa Inc.; Bran Selic from Rational Software; Wai-Cheung Tang of Comdev; Nortel Network Corp.’s Bruce Townsend; Joe Wigglesworth from IBM Corp.; and McMaster University’s Max Wong. The Business Development Bank of Canada has recognized two broadband workers as young entrepreneurs of the year. Ryan Kalt, CEO of NuMedia Internet, received the prize for Ontario and also received the export achievement award from BDC and the Export Development Corp. The 22-year-old has seen his Kingston firm increase its revenue by more than 1400% since 1998. Jeff Campbell, president/CEO of Core Networks Inc., received the Nova Scotia honours. The 25-year-old now has 100 employees at his Halifax company, which builds software to automate high-speed Internet connection and management for cablecos. Ernst & Young has announced the winners of its regional entrepreneur of the year awards (NL, July 17/01). William Hunter of Vancouver’s Angiotech Pharmaceuticals Inc. won the technology & communications prize for the Pacific region. Omur Sezerman, the president/CEO of Oz Optics Ltd. in Ottawa, was named entrepreneur of the year in Ontario. The technology award was presented to Mark Chamberlain of Wescam Inc. of Burlington. Mickey MacDonald from Halifax’s DownEast Communications Inc. took the technology prize for Atlantic Canada. The awards for Quebec will be handed out later this week.
