Unique Broadband Systems Inc., Concord ON, has announced that Rowland Fleming has agreed to stand for election to the company’s board of directors. Fleming has a wealth of international experience spanning more than 35 years in the financial services sector. He has previously served as president and CEO of the Toronto Stock Exchange. He has also held several senior level positions in the banking industry including deputy chair, president and CEO of the National Trust Co., president and CEO of the Dominion of Canada General Insurance Co., and executive VP at the Bank of Nova Scotia. The election of the company’s board will take place at its next annual general meeting on Nov. 27. Gerry Pond, president of Aliant Inc.’s telecom and emerging business units, has decided to retire after 35 years in the telecommunications industry. He will, however, remain with the company in the position of executive VP of Aliant Inc., where he will assist Stephen Wetmore until year’s end with the transition. Three prominent Canadian securities lawyers have joined the Toronto office of business law firm, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. The firm’s newest partners are John Sabine, Grant Haynen and Michael Melanson. Sabine, who once held the position of president and CEO at a publicly traded company, is well-known in the corporate commercial, law, finance and securities, mergers and acquisitions, and mining. He has been a practicing lawyer for more than 25 years. Haynen also specializes in corporate finance and securities practices, but places an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and corporate finance. Melanson specializes in corporate and securities law with a concentration in public and private financial offerings, takeover bids and mergers and acquisitions. He also has a strong background in the regulatory field having worked at the Ontario Securities Commission and the Toronto Stock Exchange. The firm’s Ottawa office also welcomes Eric Smith into its ranks in the corporate technology group. Last year, he was named one of Ottawa’s "Forty under 40". Prior to joining the law firm, he co-founded Venbridge Inc., a business and financial services company. He also held the position of VP general counsel and corporate secretary at Corel Corp. In-building wireless network provider, Azonic Networks Inc., has appointed Jocelyne Côté-O’Hara to its board of directors. During the past 15 years, Côté-O’Hara played a major role in changing the Canadian telecommunications industry from a monopoly to a competitive environment. She has held positions of VP government relations at BCTel and was founding president/CEO at Stentor Telecom Policy Inc. Former Newbridge Networks Corp. executive, Michael Pascoe, has joined edgeflow Inc.’s board of directors. Most recently, he was president and CEO at PairGain Technologies, a publicly traded company acquired by ADC Telecommunications last year. Prior to that posting, he was president of Newbvridge’s U.S. division and formerly executive VP and GM of the North and South American business regions. Additionally, Venture Coaches Claude Haw and Ken Wigglesworth of EagleOne Ventures have joined the company’s board of directors. Canada’s wireless industry has honoured some remarkable people from Western Canada with Wireless Safety Awards for quick thinking in emergency situations. Debbie Fedorak used her cell phone to help the RCMP get a drunk driver off the road. Tineke Rijzinga used her cell phone to call for help when a bear was approaching. The ringing of the sirens scared the bear off. Aarti Smith lent her cell phone to a stranger that was unsure about driving a long distance in a potential unsafe car. Darren Thomas used his cell phone to call for help after witnessing a terrible accident. The winners for Central Canada will be announced on Nov. 5. Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), a smart card manufacturer, has expanded production capabilities in Dulles VA to go along with upgrades already completed at facilities in Markham ON, Mexico City, and others, and has appointed a new VP to head the unit. John O’Malley has been named VP, after having been with the company for five years. Anna Rosetti, has been appointed VP, sales and marketing, responsible for all financial and retail markets. Hassan Tavassoli becomes director of sales and is responsible for the transportation, multimedia, healthcare and ID systems markets. Nan Zaman joins as a project manager for the previously mentioned market segments.
