Bell Canada International has named Bill Anderson as CEO in addition to his duties as chair of the BCE subsidiary. Anderson is also president of BCE Ventures. He replaces Louis Tanguay, who is retiring. Tanguay will become vice-chair of BCI. Gerry Pond is retiring as president of Aliant Telecom and Emerging Business. The 35-year telecom veteran, who began his career at NBTel, will serve as EVP of Aliant Inc. and as an advisor to Aliant Inc. president/CEO Stephen Wetmore until the end of the year. There are more departures from Nortel Networks Corp. William Kerr has resigned as SVP corporate business development. He will be succeeded by Craig Johnson, currently VP mergers and acquisitions. The company’s VP global recruitment, François Guay, has left to form his own recruiting firm. TalentShift Inc. will be based in Ottawa. Ottawa’s Solinet Systems has changed its name to Ceyba and has added three people to the executive. Benoit Fleury, a veteran of Nortel, is the new VP marketing. Alcatel alumnus Jim Ghadbane is VP for R&D and John Bournazos, previously with Redback Networks, is VP sales & field operations. Denis Carmel has been appointed acting director general, communications at the CRTC. He had been manager, media and Parliamentary relations. Former Nortel COO Clarence Chandran has been elected to the board of directors of Alcan Inc. Joining him on the board is Montreal lawyer Brian Levitt. A committee of shareholders, led by ousted CEO Alex Dolgonos, at Unique Broadband Systems Inc. has put forward a slate of new directors for the troubled wireless company. The proposed team includes John A. MacDonald, president/CEO of Leitch Technology Corp. and formerly with Bell Canada; Jolian Investments Ltd. president Gerald McGoey, a one-time COO of Bell and past EVP/CFO of BCE Inc.; Ericsson Canada’s director of regulatory affairs and standardization Peter Minaki; Louis Mitrovich, former group VP of Alcatel Networks Corp. and VP/ country senior officer of Alcatel Canada; and financial consultant Douglas Reeson. This move is the latest in upheavals at the firm (NL, July 30/01). BCE Inc. chair/CEO Jean Monty is chair of the Business Council on National Issues. He replaces PanCanadian Energy Corp.’s David O’Brien as head of the lobby group. Martin Pinard has been named president, WAN Communications for Eicon Networks Corp. He has experience as president and GM of Silicon Graphics Inc. Guy Beaudry is the new SVP corporate affairs for the Business Development Bank of Canada. He formerly worked for Groupe Vidéotron as SVP corporate affairs and chair/CEO of its Wavepath wireless unit. Richard Hubble is now running European operations for Sigma Systems Group Inc. of Toronto. He had been managing director of XACCT Technologies (UK) Ltd. Robert Crawhall is the new president of the National Capital Institute of Telecommunications. The Nortel veteran has served on several boards including Communications and Information Technology Ontario, the Canadian Standards Association and the New Media Innovation Centre. Denzil Doyle will be inducted into the Canadian Information Productivity Awards hall of fame later this month. The founding president of Digital Equipment of Canada Ltd. and Capital Alliance Ventures Inc. chair is often referred to as the father of Ottawa high tech. Giesecke & Devrient of Dulles VA has made several appointments to its North American operations team. John O’Malley, who has spent five years in the telecommunications section of G&D, is now VP of the business unit. Brien Jones-Lantzy is the new director of sales while Chris Jahr takes on the role of telecommunications project manager of the technology company.
