Communications law specialist Phil Rogers has joined Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP as a partner. He was previously a law partner at Gowlings. He has also served as assistant general counsel at Bell Canada, and has extensive experience in telecommunications, broadcasting, Internet, privacy and regulatory law. Consolidation at Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc.has resulted in some personnel shuffling. Peter Sussman has been named the CEO of a newly formed entertainment group, which is comprised of television and in-house motion picture production and worldwide distribution activities. Seaton McLean, president of production at the group, will be responsible for all television and in-house motion picture production activities. Ted Riley, president of distribution, will have worldwide responsibility for distribution of Alliance Atlantis’ television and in-house motion-picture content. The company’s broadcast group remains under the leadership of CEO Phyllis Yaffe and president and COO Mark Rubinstein. Johanne Brunet joins Distraction Formats as partner and executive VP. For the past three years, she was senior VP of TV5 Americas (Canada, U.S. and South America). Sarah Irwin was recently appointed director of TVOntario’s new e-learning division. She was most recently head of business and skills development for the new web division. She will be responsible for distance learning and skills training initiatives, including the Independent Learning Centre, online broadcast enhancements, and the implementation and development of future e-learning initiatives and partnerships. At Corus Entertainment, Susan Schaefer has been promoted to VP of marketing in the company’s television division, and Dolores Keating-Mallen has been upped to creative head. The two are now responsible for Corus’ specialty channels YTV, Treehouse TV and WTN, as well as diginets The Documentary Channel, Country Canada, EdgeTV, Scream and Discovery Kids. Prior to their promotions, Schaefer and Keating-Mallen were responsible for the children’s television brands at Corus. As well, the role of Suzanne Carpenter, VP of sales, has expanded to include WTN. Harry Persaud moves from YTV to Stornoway Communications in the position of director of programming services. He worked for YTV for 11 years, most recently as senior manager of production services. Glenna Carr, Jonathan Goldbloom and Robert Ottenhoff are new appointees to Vision TV’s board of directors. Carr is CEO of Toronto-based Carr-Gordon Ltd., Goldbloom is senior associate with Columbia Communications Inc. and Ottenhoff was COO of the U.S. Public Broadcasting Service from 1991 to 1999. Rogers Cable Inc. president and CEO John Tory has been named to the board of directors of Charter Communications Inc. Louise Clements has been named VP of market development at Bell Globemedia. She will be responsible for developing and expanding integrated marketing relationships with key clients, creating new media and distribution platforms for the company and developing BGM convergence opportunities. Clements was VP of sales and e-commerce for Sympatico-Lycos. Previous to that, she worked for the Southam Newspaper Group and AOL. Adrian Burns joins the board of directors of Shaw Communications Inc. She is a former member of the Copyright Board and a former CRTC commissioner. Denis Dunlop has been named VP and general manager of CTV Saskatchewan. Bonnie Thompson has been appointed producer in the National Film Board’s Edmonton studio. She will work with filmmakers from Alberta and the Northwest Territories to develop and produce documentaries and coproductions. Paule Beaugrand-Champagne has been appointed president and director-general of Télé-Québec (Sociéte de télédifusion du Québec). She is currently editor-in-chief of news at Radio-Canada. CanWest Global Communications Corp. has named Montreal businessman and former president of the Montreal Alouettes Larry Smith as the publisher of its daily the Montreal Gazette. He assumes the position on Feb. 11. The job has been vacant since former publisher Michael Goldbloom resigned at the end of September. As well, Kathy Gardner joins the CanWest Media Sales team as VP of integrated media research. The appointment is also effective Feb. 11. Previously, she was executive VP and director of media operations at Bates Canada, where she was responsible for clients in the automotive, fast food, packaged goods and retail sectors. She has also served on the Canadian Media Directors Council and is past president of the Broadcast Research Council. Eight candidates have been selected for the 2002 Women in the Director’s Chair Workshop, a 17-day course operated in conjunction with the Banff Centre and ACTRA. The successful applicants are: Annie Bradley, Maureen Bradley, Shirley Cheechoo, Susan Duligal, Patti Henderson, Andrea Mann, Shandi Mitchell and Jacqueline Samuda. The upcoming session of Women in the Directors Chair Workshop runs Jan. 25 - Feb. 10 at the Banff Centre.
