Giants to develop multimedia messaging systemApple Computer Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc. and Ericsson are teaming up to develop a system for bringing multimedia content such as movie clips to cell phones and other wireless devices. The three companies are banding together to battle rivals such as Microsoft Corp. and RealNetworks in the emerging multimedia messaging market. Dubbed the Ericsson Content Delivery Solution, the system would enable video clips to run on a variety of devices without having to reformat the file. It will include Apple's QuickTime streaming video system, content distribution software from Sun, and wireless infrastructure from Ericsson.Wireless Village releases initial specificationsWireless Village, an initiative sponsored by the three cell phone giants, Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia, and other companies, has released its initial specifications. The new specs call for and will enable the interoperability of instant messaging and presence services (IMPS). According to representatives for Wireless Village, the initial specs are a powerful catalyst for promoting universal interoperability between mobile and fixed network IMPS. The group has worked on this initial specification for more than 10 months and is ready to begin delivering a suite of applications and services on various types of advanced wireless networks.Wavecom releases new wireless moduleSan Diego CA-based Wavecom Inc. has introduced the WISMO Quik, a range of integrated ready-to-use products that are adaptable, easy to use and can offer a quick way to integrate wireless capability into any application. WISMO Quik is ideal for both the handset manufacturing market as well as other vertical markets such as machine-to-machine, mobile computing and automotive application. There are two versions of the module that operate on both GSM/GPRS and CDMA networks.EADS and Nortel propose new TDMA standardEADS Defense & Security Networks (ESDN) and Nortel Networks Corp. have submitted a proposal to create a new Project 25, two-slot TDMA standard. This new technology will fit into a critical place in the Project 25 family of wireless, digital technology standards for public safety. Both companies have worked hard to make sure the proposal fits the needs of the large, geographically constrained U.S. public safety agencies. This new proposal expands and enhances upon earlier work conducted by ComNet Ericsson that has subsequently been withdrawn.Ecutel system selected by Glendale police forceGlendale CA's police force has purchased equipment and services from Ecutel Inc. to upgrade its patrol vehicles with new wirelessly enabled computers. The force's cruisers will be quipped with computers connected to a wireless LAN that will link the whole city and allow officers to file reports, access national databases and communicate internally. With Ecutel's Viatores 3.1 mobile private network software, the entire force will be able to conduct business in a completely secure environment.Navini announces agreement with Oki NetworksTexas-based Navini Networks Inc. has signed an agreement with Oki Network Technologies, which brings the California-based firm into Navini's partner program. The two companies will work together to integrate Oki's voice technology into Navini's wireless data offering.FCC releases report The Federal Communications Commission has released its third annual report on the deployment of advanced communications services. The FCC indicatesthat there has been a 250% increase in broadband subscribership over data reported in the second report, which had data covering an 18-month period.
