At the CRTC, Anne-Marie Murphy has been appointed to the new position of special advisor to the chair for six months. Replacing Murphy in her previous position as director of broadcasting operations on an interim basis is Robert Ramsay. Lyne Rénaud becomes acting director of the acquisitions and ownership policy section, the position formerly held by Ramsay. Micheline Charest, founder of embattled Cinar Corp., has been hired by the Just for Laughs Group to develop new international business for the group. Also, Robert Bourque, formerly VP of control at Vidéotron ltée, becomes VP of finance, and David Gilmour, formerly with the Cirque du Soleil, takes charge of sponsorship sales for the North American English-speaking markets. Aliant Inc. has appointed Jay Forbes its president and CEO. He has been serving as acting CEO since March 1, when former president and CEO Stephen Wetmore moved to Bell Canada as corporate vice-chair. Bruce Burgetz becomes senior VP and chief information officer at Rogers AT&T Wireless. He is responsible for the development, management and support of information technology, and will work closely with the Rogers group of companies to ensure the delivery of all convergence-related programs. Rogers Communications Inc. vice-chair Philip Lind has been named a member of the Order of Canada. Eleanor Ruth Dawson and François Lemieux have been appointed members of the Competition Tribunal. Peter Leupen is the new VP of advertising sales at CanWest Global Communications Corp.’s National Post. He has been an executive in traditional and electronic media for over 18 years. Most recently, he was director of advertising sales at Rogers Media for MoneySense and general manager for the magazine and MoneySense.ca. Leupen will be responsible for generating additional revenue streams the Post and as part of the CanWest Media sales group. Laurier LaPierre has been named chair of Canadian Heritage’s national advisory board for its cultural online strategy. The board will provide direction and share expertise in the context of the strategy and goals of the Canadian Culture Online Program. Among the board members are Roma Khanna, VP of Snap Media; Leif Storm Kaldor, executive producer at Tyndal Stone Media Inc.; and Donna Skelly, News 4 Hamilton.com president and CEO. Rita Middleton becomes senior VP of corporate finance at Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. Restructuring at TVA sees René Bourdages, previously with Astral Media, become senior VP of broadcasting and operations at TVA. Philippe Lapointe has been named VP of news and public affairs, and Sophie Pellerin is upped to VP of programming. As well, Réal Germain has been promoted to general manager of public affairs and special projects. Hilary Read has been promoted to COO of Toronto-based BBC Worldwide Canada. In Memory Broadcast veteran and multiculturalism promoter Johnny Lombardi died March 18 at age 86. He owned CHIN Radio.
