Bill Hunt has been appointed VP and general manager of specialty television at Global Television. Since 1997, Hunt has worked at Global, helping launch and manage the day-to-day operations of the specialty channel Prime. Also, as VP of specialty affiliate relations, he introduced six new digital television services in September 2001: Lonestar, DejaView, Mentv, Mystery, Xtreme Sports and Fox Sports World Canada. Scot MacDonald, director of business development with Technology PEI Inc., takes over responsibility for film, television and new media development in Prince Edward Island. He takes over the duties previously held by Berni Wood, director of film, television and new media, who has been appointed regional VP for the Canadian Television Fund. Adam Ostry departs his post as head of the Ontario Media Development Corp. (OMDC) next month after three years in the position. He’s not sure what he will do next, but he says he turned down an offer to remain at OMDC. At Rogers Broadcasting, Rael Merson has been appointed president and CEO. Rogers Broadcasting owns and operates radio stations, the CFMT television system in Ontario, The Shopping Channel, and manages three diginets: the Biography Channel, MSNBC and TechTV. Merson was executive VP and general manager of The Shopping Channel from 1995-2001. He joined Rogers in 1988 as VP of finance. Douglas Beeforth has been named president of Rogers Sportsnet. Beeforth has spent the past decade as a senior executive with CTV and Sportsnet. At the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), Sharon Orr, senior VP of marketing and member services, has retired after nine years with the organization. She has been retained on contract to manage the association’s convention in Vancouver in October. Andrée Dumulon, formerly director of membership services, has left to return to the National Research Council as communications advisor to the president. Lynn Buffone, who was director of radio policy, has joined Canadian Heritage on secondment. As a senior policy analyst, she will work on Canadian content issues. Buffone has been with the CAB for 12 years. Journalist Paul Waldie is rejoining The Globe and Mail ’s Report on Business section. Waldie, who worked at the Globe from 1995 to 1999, has been with The National Post since August 1999, most recently as national editor. Tony Berman has been named editor-in-chief for CBC news and current affairs for both radio and television. He will be the public broadcaster’s chief journalist in interpreting journalistic policy across all English media platforms. Alexander Crawley has been appointed executive director of the Canadian Independent Film Caucus. He was most recently the executive director of the Canadian Screen Training Center. He was president of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) from 1991 to 1997 and director of the Canadian Conference of the Arts for three terms.
