The creation of Bell West out of the ashes of Bell Intrigna and Bell Nexxia’s western operations has led to substantial changes in telecom boardrooms. Randy Reynolds moves from president/CEO of Nexxia to assume the same roles at Bell West. A new chief of Nexxia will be appointed in the next few weeks. Bell Canada president John Sheridan is Bell West’s chair. Louise Villeneuve shifts from being COO at Intrigna to COO at Bell West. Murray Bamforth will be CFO. Cheryl Barker, who had been chair/president/CEO of Intrigna, moves back to MTS Communications Inc. as president/COO. Before joining Intrigna, she was EVP finance/CFO at MTS. David Rourke moves from EVP operations at MTS to become president/COO at subsidiary MTS Advanced Inc. Several changes have occurred in the BCE Emergis executive suite.Terry Ham is the head of the newly formed business development group. His role as president of the USA unit is taken by Alan Neely, the former chief marketing officer. Christian Trudeau is interim chief of Emergis’ Canadian section, following the departure of Jacques Malo. François Côté is in charge of eHealth Canada. CFO Nelson Gentiletti now assumes responsibility for investor relations. Canbras, the Brazilian broadband company owned by Bell Canada International, has elected a new board of directors at its annual meeting. Joining the board are William Anderson, chair/CEO of BCI and president of BCE Ventures; Jose Guimaraes Monforte, of private financiers Janos Comercio Administracao e Participacoes Ltda.; and Raul Rosenthal of M2 Participacoes S/C Ltda. BCI representatives re-elected to the board were vice-chair Louis Tanguay (also chair of the Canbras board); EVP/COO Robert Bouchard; and EVP/CFO Howard Hendrick. Others returning as directors are Robert Kearney, who will serve as deputy chair of the Canbras board; Renato Ferreira Jr., president/CEO of Canbras; and former Canbras president/CEO Philip Patterson. Leaving the Canbras board are Sen. Jerry Grafstein, Omar Grine, Walter Longo and Thomas Steele. Ken Harrison has been appointed VP Ontario public sector by Telus Corp. The 25-year telecom veteran was previously VP sales for Telus National Systems, which used to be known as Williams Communications Canada before it was acquired by the western telco. Aziz Pirani is the new VP Ontario financial sector. He was most recently VP sales for Telus enterprise solutions and has worked with Information Builders (Canada), Merit Digital Systems and Xerox Canada. The new VP complementary channels is Phil Soper. He had been director of sales in B.C. for Compaq Canada Corp. but will be based in Toronto in his new role. Rob Malcolmson is now a partner at the broadcasting, telecommunications and new media law group at Goodmans LLP in Toronto. It marks a return to the firm for Malcolmson, who had left it to join Headline Media Group Inc. He was president of the specialty TV channel operator until last March and previously served as SVP of the company. Arthur Tymos is the new COO at Creation Technologies Inc. of Vancouver. He most recently served as VP/CIO of Telus and has over 20 years experience working for Telus predecessors BC Tel and BC Telecom. Don Henderson has been named as Ottawa site leader and senior director of engineering at Adobe Systems Inc.’s operations in the nation’s capital. He had been SVP global product development at Accellio Corp., which was recently purchased by Adobe. He has experience at Trekware Corp., Charandon Computer Systems and SHL/Systemhouse Ltd. JDS Uniphase Corp. has announced that COO Greg Dougherty is scaling back his work with the Ottawa high-tech firm due to a family crisis. A news release from the company said an unidentified family member is battling a serious illness. President/CEO Jozef Straus will assume a greater role in management while Dougherty is indisposed. Daniel Somers has been elected to the board of net storage company YottaYotta. Currently vice-chair of investment bankers Blaylock & Partners LP, he has been president/CEO of AT&T Broadband and Internet Services, senior EVP at AT&T, chair/CEO of Bell Cablemedia plc and EVP/CFO of Bell Canada International Inc. Imagis Technologies Inc., a Vancouver biometrics company, has named Murray Jamieson VP product development and services. He is an alumnus of Telus Communications and of Telus Mobility. The firm has also appointed Earl van As to the position of director of marketing. He joins the company from Multiactive Software. The Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance has named Nycol Pageau-Goyette and André Laurendeau to its board of directors. Pageau-Goyette is president of the PGA management firm and has chaired the Conseil de l’Industrie Électronique du Québec and the Greater Montreal Chamber of Commerce. Laurendeau has been president of Neomedia and a director of the CBC. He also held several VP positions at Quebecor Media. Jannat Hamid has been named as the founding chair of the Women in Leadership Foundation. The non-profit group encourages women to seek leadership roles, profiles successful Canadian women and wants to create diversity solutions for the private and public sectors. Hamid is a former VP of Canadian Women in Communications. Joining her at the foundation is Sally Glover, who has been appointed to the advisory board. Chuck Pol is the new COO of BT’s Americas region, a new section taking over the responsibilities of the British telco’s former Concert subsidiary. Pol has spent the past four years in London working as BT’s director of mobile markets in the wholesale services and solutions division. He has also worked as business manager in the hi-tech sector and as VP sales and service for the company. Prior to joining the telecom in 1988, he worked for ITT in New York. Marlene Dortch has been appointed secretary of the Federal Communications Commission in Washington. She had been acting director of the Office of Communications Business Opportunities (OCBO). She has previous experience with the FCC’s video services division and its former mass media bureau. Replacing her at OCBO is Carolyn Fleming. She had been acting deputy director and before that served as attorney-advisor in the consumer protection and competition division of the former cable services bureau (now called the media bureau). The commission has also named Robert "Doc" Mirelson as deputy chief for consumer affairs at its consumer and governmental affairs bureau. He joins the agency from the Booz Allen Hamilton consulting firm.
