Alexander Himelfarb has been appointed clerk of the Privy Council, effective May 13. He has over 20 years of experience in the public service, including most recently as deputy minister of Canadian Heritage. He has held that position since June 1999. Judith LaRocque, currently associate deputy minister of Canadian Heritage, has been promoted to fill the position Himelfarb is vacating. As well, Michael Wernick, currently assistant deputy minister of cultural affairs at Canadian Heritage, becomes associate deputy minister at the department. Shelley Stein-Sacks has been appointed director of the Music Entrepreneur Program (MEP) at Telefilm Canada. He is the first person to fill the position, which was created within the framework of the new Canada Music Fund. Stein-Sacks was president of Musicaction FACTOR Canada from 1997-98 and president of Musicaction from 1996-99. He has also been VP of development for music retailer and distributor Groupe Archambault Inc. and VP of the Quebec market for Sam the Record Man. Julia Keatley, president of Keatley Films and co-creator and producer of Cold Squad, has been elected to a two-year term as chair of the board of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA). New members to the 26-member board, elected at the CFTPA annual general meeting on April 29 in St. John’s NF, are: Jamie Brown (Frantic Films Ltd., Winnipeg), John Delmage (Decode Entertainment Inc., Toronto), Paul Pope (Pope Productions Ltd., St. John’s NF), Lisa Richardson (Dogwood Pictures Inc., North Vancouver), Mary Young Leckie (Tapestry Pictures Inc., Toronto), and Mike Volpe (Topsail Entertainment Limited, Halifax). Susan Vaas has been appointed the new director of production, financing and business affairs at the Canadian Film and Television Production Association’s Ottawa office. She will work on tax, financing and related policy issues. For the last four years, she was head of legal and business affairs and a senior tax credit officer at Canadian Heritage’s Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office. Tim McGee has been named president of Bell ExpressVu. The current president David McLennan has been appointed CFO of Bell Canada. McLennan replaces Jon Klug, who is returning to SBC. Doug Brooks has been named chief marketing and sales officer at CBC Television. He is currently executive director of sales for CBC Television. Prior to joining CBC, Brooks worked at Coca-Cola Canada. Robert Despres has been named chair of Cinar Corp. Depres represents the 63.7 per cent voting stake in Cinar held by founders Micheline Charest and Ronald Weinberg. Outgoing president and CEO Barrie Usher was named a director of the board during the transition to his replacement. Also, Steve Carson was named president of educational publishing arm Cinar Education, and George Rossi becomes senior VP and CFO on an interim basis. Lions Gate Entertainment has signed the nucleus of its senior management team to new long-term contracts and named recently-hired James Keegan to the new position of chief administrative officer. He will oversee Lions Gate’s finance division, administrative activities and information technology initiatives worldwide. President Tom Ortenberg, president of production Michael Paseornek, and home entertainment and acquisitions president Peter Block all signed multi-year deals. Earlier in the year, production president Kevin Beggs signed a long-term deal when he was promoted. Former Industry minister Brian Tobin has been named advisor to Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP on matters including public/private partnerships, the East coast resource industries and other emerging business trends. Peter Moss has been named VP of programming at Corus Television. Formerly the president of Cinar Entertainment, he started in the newly created position on May 1. Véronique Lussier has been appointed director of marketing and communications at Les Chaînes Télé-Astral’s youth channel VRAK.TV. She will continue to serve as director of marketing and communications for the specialty channel Canal Vie.
