Sylvia Sweeney has been appointed executive producer of the National Film Board’s (NFB) Ontario production centre effective June 24. Prior to joining the NFB, Sweeney was president of Elitha Peterson Productions Inc. She is a longtime producer and director, and a director of the Ontario Media Development Corp. Sweeney replaces Louise Lore, who has served in the executive producer capacity for a six-and-a-half-year term. Michel Pradier has been named director of Quebec operations at Telefilm Canada. Pradier joined Telefilm in 1997, and has filled several positions including financial analyst at the feature film unit and at the television unit. He was head of the television unit before being named interim director of the Quebec office in 2001. Before joining Telefilm, he occupied several positions at SOGEC (now SODEC) from 1991 to 1997, including those of assistant director -business relations and financial analyst - tax credit. He had previously worked in production for almost ten years. In Halifax, Telefilm has appointed Gordon Whittaker as its new investment analyst. Whittaker brings 10 years of industry experience with him, including the last two at Helix Animation Inc. as VP/COO. Previously he held the position as executive director of the Atlantic Film Festival. Several of The Capital Hill Group’s lobbyists were retained by Torstar Corp. to fight CRTC Decision 2002-81 awarding a broadcast licence in Toronto to Craig Broadcast Systems Inc. Herb Metcalfe, David Dyer, Kim Doran and Nanci Woods each registered with the federal government to lobby on the issue. They joined Johnston & Buchan partner Robert Buchan who was also retained by Torstar on the same issue (CNM, May 31/02). For its part, Craig retained several Earnscliffe Strategy Group staff, including Michael Robinson, Charles King, and Andre Albinati.Torstar lost its appeal. Hill and Knowlton’s Christina De Toni has registered with the federal government to lobby on behalf of Microsoft Canada Co. in the area of Canada’s innovation strategy and related education and connectivity issues. Bingo.com Inc. has appointed Steve Moriya as senior account executive in charge of advertising sales. The National Hockey League has retained Prospectus Associates Inc.’s Sean Kirby to lobby on its behalf on broadcasting licence, Internet and satellite TV issues. Kirby was a media spokesperson for the Prime Minister in the 1997 election campaign.
