Telus Mobility to launch financial service from ForbesTelus Mobility has signed an agreement with SmartServ Online Inc. to introduce the Forbes.com Wireless Powered by SmartServ financial service in Canada. The service will provide real-time access to Canadian and U.S. stock market information. Other services included are index information, timed notifications, symbol search and a currency converter. Forbes.com Wireless Powered by SmartServ will be available on a wide variety of web-enabled handsets. Users will pay on a pay-per-use basis. Aliant Telecom Mobility passes 500,000 subscriber markAliant Telecom Mobility has passed the 500,000 subscriber mark in Atlantic Canada, which translates into one in every five people in the region subscribing to wireless services from Aliant. The company’s cellular service reaches 95% of the population in the region, and more than 55% can enjoy digital service. In other Aliant news, the company has engaged Voice Mobility International Inc. to migrate its current voice mail customers to Voice Mobility’s UCN 200 enhanced messaging platform. The Vancouver-based firm will receive up to $7 million in revenue over the course of the three-year transition plan. SR Telecom lands major contract in AfricaMontreal-based SR Telecom Inc. has signed a $22-million contract with a national exchange carrier in Africa, which will purchase SR Telecom’s SR500 point-to-multipoint fixed wireless system. The African carrier has purchased SR Telecom gear in the past. SR Telecom will also provide turnkey services. Equipment deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this fiscal year. Infowave licenses software to Asian operatorInfowave Software has announced a licensing agreement with one of Asia’s more significant network operators, Hong Kong CSL. The Asian company will license Infowave’s Infowave Symmetry Pro wireless access product, which provides secure access to corporate email, calendaring and contacts on a wide variety of Palm and Pocket PC devices. Wireless on demo at G8 in CalgaryThe city of Calgary’s new Wireless City Initiative, being co-piloted by Calgary Technologies Inc. and Promoting Calgary Inc., will be on display at the main media centre for the Summit of the G8 in nearby Calgary this week. The initiative provides domestic and international media with high-speed access to the Internet through wirelessly enabled laptops and also provides tourist information to hospitality volunteers with PDAs. The G8 summit runs until the end of the week in nearby Kananaskis. RIM files patent infringment suit against GoodResearch in Motion Ltd. has filed a complaint in a U.S. district level court against Good Technology Inc. RIM alleges that Good’s wireless goods and services infringe on four patents, which were filed as early as 1994. All four patents fall into RIM’s wireless integration patent portfolio. RIM is asking the court to grant an injunction against Good and award it damages for Good’s infringement on its patents. BitFlash set to land deal with Texas InstrumentsOttawa-based chip developer BitFlash will soon unveil details of an agreement with chip giant Texas Instruments. BitFlash is developing a new way of making it easier for wireless devices to read and view graphics-rich information. LinCsat secures rights to enterprise marketLinCsat Communications has signed an agreement with Hughes Network Systems securing the rights to offer DIRECWAY’s Enterprise Solutions to the Canadian enterprise market. This enables LinCsat to offer high-speed Internet access to the small- and medium-sized business and the large corporate markets. C-COM Satellite signs major distribution deal Ottawa-based C-COM Satellite Systems Inc. has signed a major marketing and distribution agreement with Electronics Wholesale of Edmonton. The partnership allows C-COM to further expand its distribution channels into communities in western and northern Canada. Sierra Wireless signs distribution deal in SingaporeSierra Wireless has entered the Singapore market through a distribution agreement with Network Electronics S.E.A. Pte Ltd. Under terms of the agreement, Network Electronics will distribute the AirCard 750 in the market. The company has also agreed to purchase a set quantity of the wireless modem cards, which will be commercially available in the latter half of this month. Cell-Loc’s technology goes commercial with IQ2 Cell-Loc Inc. has announced that IQ2 Communications has received a commercially available version of its Cellocate Beacon network. IQ2 will now begin location-based services trials with preferred customers. Hopes are that commercially available services will soon be on the market through the IQ2-Cell-Loc joint venture, TimesThree Calgary. Primal Technologies combines voice mail/prepaid appsPrimal Technologies Inc., Toronto, has combined voice mail features and pre-paid applications on its Primal Service Node (PSN). The combined features on a single device enables communications service providers to keep capital expenditures in check, while increasing customer satisfaction and reducing churn for providers. Roadpost launches new service offering for remote workersRoadpost Inc. has introduced a new service that reduces corporate administrative tasks by combining subscription and pre-paid Iridium services in one package. The service, dubbed Crew Calling, was launched at the Global Petroleum Show in Calgary two weeks ago. The service is ideal for multiple Iridium phone users in remote locations such as oil rigs, remote drilling sites or on vessels. Eleven Engineering ships Spike development kitEleven Engineering Inc., Edmonton, has announced that initial shipments of its Spike Wireless Development Kit (WDK) will begin on June 28. The Spike WDK enables video game peripheral developers to incorporate wireless control into such devices as joy sticks (RoW, Feb. 19/02).
