Mike Lazaridis, founder, president and co-CEO of Research in Motion Ltd., has been appointed to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada for a term of three years. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the council, according to Industry Minister Allan Rock. "As an outstanding innovator and successful head of one of Canada’s fastest growing technology companies, his contribution to the council is sure to be substantial and dynamic," Rock said in a news release.Former Nortel Networks Corp. executive Jules Meunier has been appointed to the board of directors of Zarlink Semiconductor. At Nortel, Meunier spearheaded the company’s wireless business as president, wireless networks and as VP sales, marketing and operations of GSM systems at Nortel Matra Cellular in France. He is currently president and CEO of ProQuent Systems, a Boston-based start-up developing wireless infrastructure equipment. COM DEV International Ltd. has appointed Gary Calhoun CFO, replacing Tim Zahavich who left the Cambridge ON-based company on August 9 to become CFO of a Toronto-based semiconductor outfit. Calhoun has held senior finance positions within COM DEV since July 2001. Prior to joining COM DEV, Calhoun spent 12 years at Westinghouse Canada Inc. in senior financial and operations roles. C-COM Satellite Systems Inc. has announced that Russel Newbury, VP and COO, and Mike Sangster, VP sales, have left the company. Newbury will, however, remain as an advisor to the service provider. The positions will not be filled and the company has undertaken some structural changes to reflect the change. Mark Hayes, a partner in Davis Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP’s technology, ecommerce and communications practice is leaving to join Ogilvy Renault. Hayes has been recognized as one of Canada’s leading media and technology lawyers and has represented such groups as the Canadian Association of Internet Providers, the Canadian Cable Television Association and Bell Canada before the Copyright Board of Canada. Aliant Inc. has appointed Barry Kydd as executive VP and CFO. Since March, Aliant president and CEO Jay Forbes has been acting as CFO on an interim basis. Kydd has extensive financial experience in the communications field having served as VP global financial operations for Lucent Technologies Inc. He has also held a number of financial positions within the aerospace, health and resources sectors. During the second quarter, Mobile Knowledge Inc. added some significant management experience to its executive team. Dave Schenkel was appointed CTO. He draws on more than 25 years experience in the technology sector. Blair Nichols takes over as executive VP of sales and marketing having held positions at IKON Canada and General Electric’s IT division. As well, Mick Chawer is acting executive VP product engineering. He brings technical knowledge having served at Newbridge Networks (now part of Alcatel SA), Mitel, Gandalf and iMPath. Robert Kelly has been appointed VP and human resources officer at NAV Canada, effective August 6. He brings to the table more than 20 years of HR experience having held senior level positions in Canadian and American firms. Intrinsyc Software Inc. has appointed Vincent Luciano to its board of directors. He is a 25-year veteran of the technology industry and is currently VP product management for Symbol Technologies’ mobile computing business. Look Communications Inc. has named Stéphanie Brody as its new communications manager.
