Elaine Ali has been named as senior VP of CTV Stations Group. She will have overall responsibility for all of CTV’s 27 owned-and-operated local stations. She will be based in Winnipeg. Previously, she was VP and general manager at CKY Winnipeg, a position she held since 1998. From 1996 to January 2002, she was president of WTN, a position she held concurrently with her role at CKY. Del Sexsmith has been appointed general manager of Global Television Network’s recently licensed FM radio station in Winnipeg. Sexsmith has worked 21 years in the radio business, and 11 years as a consultant in marketing and advertising. The new radio station will begin broadcasting with a smooth jazz format at 99.1 FM in early 2003. Judson Martin is leaving his position as executive VP and CFO of Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. to join a real estate investment trust as president and CEO. Rita Middleton, senior VP of corporate finance, will assume Martin’s responsibilities until a permanent replacement can be found. He leaves Alliance Atlantis on November 1. Sydney Suissa joins Barna-Alper Productions as VP of documentary production and development. Previously, Suissa was senior VP of factual programming at Alliance Atlantis Communications for five years. Marc Sévigny, director general of communications for French Television at Radio-Canada, is leaving the public broadcaster. Senior consultant Sarah Anson-Cartwright and managing partner Edmond Chiasson at Global Public Affairs Inc. have been hired as lobbyists for Aboriginal Voices Radio Inc. They will lobby Canadian Heritage, Indian and Northern Affairs, the CRTC, and Industry Canada on aboriginal affairs, broadcasting, and arts and culture for the radio network on behalf of their client. They will also provide advice and counsel on broadcast policy issues. Strategico Inc. CEO Gordon Ritchie has been hired by Verizon Communications Inc. to lobby on its behalf on foreign ownership provisions regarding broadcasting and telecommunications. John Gill has been promoted to senior VP of programming for factual and BBC channels at Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting Group. Gill, who oversaw the launches of the digital channels BBC Canada and BBC Kids, will also take responsibility for History Television and National Geographic Channel. Prior to joining Alliance Atlantis in February 2001, Gill was director of network scheduling at TVOntario. Also given expanded responsibilities was Cindy Witten, who becomes VP of original production for factual and BBC Channels. Previously, she was VP of programming for History Television. She will be responsible for production and co-productions for the specialty channels History Television, National Geographic Channel, BBC Canada and BBC Kids. As well, Jody Read has been elevated to the new position of VP of programming acquisitions for factual and BBC channels from director of programming for BBC Canada and BBC Kids. Prior to joining Alliance Atlantis last year, Read was an acquisition programmer at TVOntario. Debra Wynter, senior tax credit officer for the English market at the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office (CAVCO), is on French training leave for four months. She will return to her CAVCO duties on Jan. 2, 2003. Claude Richard has been appointed as new manager of business development and advertising sales at MSN.CA. He will lead the national sales team, manage strategic business relationships and develop new business opportunities at the Canadian web portal. In Memory William Shaw, one of the founders of IMAX Corp., died August 31 at age 73. He died in a Toronto hospital following a heart attack.
