Alan Kember has retired from Nortel Networks Corp. The equipment manufacturer is not planning to fill the position of chief marketing officer, which Kember held for the past year. Rod Bryden, CEO of World Heart Corp. and chair of the Ottawa Senators hockey team, has resigned as co-chair of The Ottawa Partnership (TOP). He had been co-chair since TOP, a public-private sector advisory group, was founded in 1998. Verizon Communications Inc. of New York has hired Gordon Ritchie to lobby the Canadian government on its behalf. He will discuss foreign ownership provisions in telecom and broadcasting with Industry Canada, Canadian Heritage and the Privy Council Office. Ritchie, CEO of Strategico Inc. and chair of the public affairs practice at Hill and Knowlton Canada, was a member of the negotiating team for the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. JR Shaw, executive chair of Shaw Communications Inc., is to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award. The prize, handed out by management consultants Ernst & Young, is part of the 2002 Entrepreneur of the Year Prairies celebration on October 10. William McKeown has joined the Toronto office of Fasken Martineau as senior counsel. He is the former chair of the Canadian Competition Tribunal and a past justice of the Federal Court. Michel Bon has resigned as chair/CEO of France Telecom, although he will continue to serve until his replacement is named. Reports in Paris speculate that Thierry Breton, chair/CEO of Thomson Multimedia, will be the new chief executive. The Federal Communications Commission in Washington has made staff changes. Bryan Tramont is now senior legal advisor to FCC chair Michael Powell. He previously worked for commissioner Kathleen Abernathy. Tramont replaces Peter Tehnula, who moves to become co-director of the spectrum policy task force. There’s still no indication of when Jonathan Adelstein will be confirmed as the fifth commissioner. Republicans in the Senate are delaying confirmation as payback for the rejection of George Bush’s nominee for the federal appeals court.
