Colette Loumède takes up the position of executive producer at the National Film Board’s Studio A (formerly known as the Society and Science Documentary Studio) on October 15. She takes over from Eric Michel, who has been at the helm of the studio since 1984, but was promoted in January to head of the NFB’s international coproduction unit. From 2000, Loumède worked for the government agency SODEC as a project manager. Prior to that, she conceived and developed La culture dans tous ses états, an award-winning series of 19 documentaries on Québécois culture that was broadcast on Télé-Québec. Robert Hurst has been appointed president of CTV News. Hurst, who has been with CTV News for more than 28 years, will be responsible for the news operations of CTV News, CTV Newsnet, and Report on Business Television, as well as informational programming such as W-Five and Question Period. Hurst succeeds Kirk LaPointe, who resigned after two years to pursue another undisclosed position in the media industry. Bell Globemedia group VP of public affairs Paul Sparkes has registered as a lobbyist. He will be lobbying on behalf of Bell Globemedia and its subsidiaries on CRTC broadcast matters and areas of government funding within Canadian Heritage. He will also be dealing with Industry Canada on copyright and other matters affecting Bell Globemedia’s business. He will also follow the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage as it discusses possible changes to the Broadcasting Act. Mark Lieber has become senior programming advisor at PrideVision with the departure of Bruce Glawson, formerly VP of programming. Lieber will oversee acquisitions, scheduling, original program development, production and on-air talent, as well as continuing to play an integral role with PrideVision TV’s U.S. business development initiatives. Previously, Lieber ran his own media, production and programming consulting company, served as president of television at Film Roman, and was senior VP at PolyGram Television and Saban Entertainment. Gerri Sinclair has been named general manager of MSN.CA. She will be responsible for strategic planning, business development and marketing at the Canadian portal. Previously, she was the president of the B.C. premier’s technology council, the founder and CEO of NCompass Labs Inc. and has served on several advisory boards, including Canada’s National Information Highway Advisory Council and the National Broadband Task Force. Fabrice Brasier becomes VP of programming at Astral Media’s specialty channel Historia after resigning as general manager of news and public affairs at Television Quatre Saisons. George Addy has joined Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP’s Toronto office as senior partner heading the Competition Law and Trade Practices group. From 1996 to 1999, Addy was executive VP and chief general counsel for Telus Corp. From 1993 to 1996, he was head of the Competition Bureau and prior to that was head of the bureau’s mergers branch. David Wilson and Lynn Starchuk have become partners of Johnston & Buchan LLP. Communications law is among the areas of practice of both Wilson and Starchuk. They will concentrate on international trade and public law advocacy at Johnston & Buchan. Robert Boivin has been appointed executive director of the Cinématique Québécoise. He replaces Robert Daudelin, who announced last year he would retire after 30 years of service. Barrie Usher has resigned as president and CEO of Cinar Corp. and all subsidiaries, effective September 15. George Rossi, senior VP and CFO, replaces him until a new president and CEO is appointed. Usher stepped in to oversee the company after its stock value declined drastically and was delisted over allegations of financial irregularities, including allegations that the company put Canadian names on scripts written by Americans to qualify for Canadian tax credits. Lobbyist Isabel Metcalfe has picked up a new client, Toronto-based Summerhill Entertainment Inc. She will seek new business opportunities for her client, and will lobby Canadian Heritage, Industry Canada, CRTC, Indian and Northern Affairs, the National Film Board and other government departments on broadcasting, aboriginal affairs, arts and culture, and other matters. André Bureau has received the Academy Achievement Award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television for his exceptional contribution to the Canadian television industry. Bureau is currently a legal advisor at Heenan Blaikie and chair of the board at Astral Media Inc. Bureau served as chair of the CRTC, and prior to that was president and CEO of Canadian Satellite Communications Inc. (Cancom). JR Shaw, executive chair of Shaw Communications Inc., is to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award. The prize, handed out by management consultants Ernst & Young, is part of the 2002 Entrepreneur of the Year Prairies celebration on October 10.
