Patrick Pichette has been named CFO of Bell Canada. Previously EVP planning and performance management at BCE, he has experience at McKinsey & Co. and Call-Net Enterprises Inc. He replaces David McLennan, who will be given other duties at BCE. Telus has appointed Mark Schnarr as EVP business marketing. He has been with the western telco for more than 20 years, starting at BC Tel in 1980, and was VP Telus Internet services. He will continue as EVP ventures for the company. The Canadian e-Business Initiative has announced its leadership team. Included on the nine-member executive committee are Peter Harder, DM of Industry Canada and John Maduri, the president of Telus business solutions. Among the 31 members of the initiative are CANARIE president Andrew Bjerring; Aliant president Roch Dubé; Gaylen Duncan, the president/CEO of ITAC; David Johnston, president of the University of Waterloo and chair of the National Broadband Task Force; Bell Quebec president Guy Marier; John Reid, president of CATAAlliance; Gerri Sinclair, GM of MSN.ca Microsoft; and Rogers Cable president/CEO John Tory. Gordon Blankstein has resigned as an officer and director of Global Light Telecommunications Inc., while Robert Gardner is no longer a director. The resignations come as the Vancouver firm is granted an extension of its protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act. Cable Satisfaction International Inc. has named Jean-François Bureau senior VP and CFO. He has experience at merchant bank EdgeStone Capital Partners, at Groupe Vidéotron and at the Royal Bank. David Ostrow, CIO of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, is one of two new directors at BCNET. Joining him on the 17-member board is George Hunter, the executive director of the BC Technology Industries Association. Ian MacEachern has submitted his resignation as executive director of the National Capital Freenet. He will stay on until the end of November in order to ensure an orderly transition to his successor. Montreal test engineering company Mindready has made several changes in the executive suite. Daniel Dussault is no longer president/CEO. The CEO job will be filled in the interim by Marc Doré. The Quebecor subsidiary also announced that it was eliminating the position of EVP/COO, currently held by Louis Larouche. Michael Geist has joined the Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP law firm as technology counsel. A professor at the University of Ottawa’s law faculty, he used to practice at Goodmans LLP and is a frequent commentator in the media on Internet issues. Chatelaine and Profit magazines recently released their list of the Top 100 women business owners. Included on the roster are Minacs Worldwide Inc. president/CEO Elaine Minacs at number five; Nancy Knowlton, president/COO of SMART Technologies Inc., at number eight; Eagle Professional Resources Inc. president/COO Janis Grantham at number 10; number 15 Muriel Jasek, president of AJJA Information Technology Consultants Inc.; PC Corp. managing director Isabel Bernete at number 30; number 33 Pink Elephant Inc. CEO Fatima Cabral; Tech Electronic Services president Dawn Branton at number 48; Patricia Boersma, president/CEO of Tridon Communications, at number 55; Cross & Associates Manufacturing Inc. president/CEO Ann Cross at number 77; at number 82 Orion Communications Inc.’s CEO Aeda Naami and president Alida Abrams; CRATOS Technology Solutions Inc. president Debbie Gracie-Smith at number 93; and at number 99 Rosaleen Citron, WhiteHat Inc. CEO. As part of a reorganization, AT&T has named Betsy Bernard president-elect. The American telco is spining off its broadband unit and will merge it with Comcast. Following the conclusion of the merger, AT&T chair Michael Armstrong will become chair of AT&T Comcast, David Dorman will assume the role of chair/CEO of AT&T and Bernard will become AT&T president. She had been president/CEO of AT&T Consumer, a role that will be taken by John Polumbo, senior VP at AT&T Business. The International Telecommunication Union has re-elected Japan’s Yoshio Utsumi as secretary-general. Also returned for another term is deputy secretary-general Roberto Blois Montes de Souza of Brazil.
