As part of the restructuring that is taking place at AT&T Canada, five directors have left the board of the telco. Departing are Steve Chisholm, Alan Horn, Phil Ladouceur, David Miller and Craig Young. Joining the board are two representatives of Brascan Financial Corp., chair Robert Harding and George Myhal, CEO of financial operations for the company. BCE Emergis Inc. has appointed François Côté as president of the eHealth Solutions Group (North America). He has been at Emergis since it was founded in 1998 and previously worked at Bell Canada. The 21-year telecom veteran, who will be based in Rockville MD, replaces Faye Baggiano, who is leaving the company. Côté’s former position as executive VP of eHealth Solutions Group (Canada) is taken by Daniel Baron. He was senior VP sales for the Canadian division and also has experience at RBC Insurance and Imperial Life. He will work out of the BCE Emergis office in Mississauga ON. Frank Plastina has resigned as president of Nortel Network’s metro and enterprise networks division after 15 years with the equipment manufacturer. Oscar Rodriguez is now president/GM of the enterprise networks division, renamed since the company sold its optical unit to Bookham Technology plc (NL, October 8/02). Sue Spradley has been appointed president of the wireline networks section. Mark Stevens has been named managing director for ASEAN and Pakistan. Stevens, who will be based in Singapore, has worked for Nortel since 1990 and has experience in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. Canada Payphone has appointed president/CEO André Côté to the board of directors. The Vancouver-based company announced that two AT&T Canada representatives on the board, CFO David Lazzarato and senior VP strategy and corporate development Dean Prevost, have resigned. Telecom software manufacturer Avema Corp. has appointed new members to its board of directors. Joining the board are William Train, who has held senior positions at Xicom Products, Carolian Systems and Dynasty Components; Stanley Tyo, who has been president/CEO of MDR Switchview Inc.; and former AT&T Canada and Unitel head George Harvey. David Grinstead has stepped down as EVP of sales and business development for Voice Mobility International Inc. to take a position with a firm in Toronto. His duties will be assumed by Marco Pacelli, EVP sales at the Vancouver company. Voice Mobility’s CFO Jim Hewett has also departed "to pursue other interests," according to a news release. His role will be taken over by controller Harry Chan. The executive slate of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada has been returned by acclamation. Brian Payne is president, André Foucault is secretary-treasurer, Peter Murdoch is VP media workers, Clément L’Heureux is executive VP Quebec, Max Michaud is VP Atlantic region, Cec Makowski is VP Ontario and Dave Coles is VP western region. CEP represents workers at Bell Canada, Aliant, MTS and SaskTel. Ellen Malcolmson has been named president/CEO of Expertech Network Installation Inc. Over her 19 years in the telecom sector, Malcolmson has worked at Bell Canada as VP operator services, VP management services, director market planning and senior VP customer service at Bell Mobility. She took part in the Leadership Foundation Fellows Program of the International Women’s Forum in 2001. Carole Swan is the new associate deputy minister at Industry Canada. Formerly the associate secretary at the treasury board, the Winnipeg native has worked at the Privy Council Office, the office of privatization and regulatory affairs, the ministry of state for Economic Development and Status of Women Canada. As expected, Thierry Breton has been named chair/CEO of France Telecom. The former head of Thomson Multimedia replaces Michel Bon (NL, Sept. 23/02). Keith Uncapher, a pioneer in Internet research, died of a heart attack on October 10 at the age of 80. He was instrumental in the creation of the Arpanet, the predecessor to the Internet; the devising of the .com, .net and .edu suffixes; and an economical method of making silicon chips.
