Earl Hoeg is now acting senior director of spectrum management operations at Industry Canada, taking the place of Mike Connolly, who is on special assignment. Hoeg returned from the management consulting centre during the summer to assume his new role. Carson Chen has joined VenGrowth Capital Partners Inc.’s technology advisory board. He is currently VP and GM of Cisco Systems Inc.’s cable and wireless broadband access business unit. VenGrowth’s technology advisory board, formed earlier this year, is designed to bring together some of North America’s leading business leaders to advise VenGrowth on its investment opportunities. Chen has more than 30 years experience in the development and marketing of broadband and high-speed communications technologies. He has also held positions at National Semiconductor, Ford Aerospace and West Coast United Broadcasting Co. Camille Limoges has been appointed to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council for a three-year term. Referred to as the father of modern science and technology policy in the province of Quebec, he has been one of the pre-eminent promoters of university research. Limoges has served as deputy minister of the ministère de la recherche, de la science et de la technologie and president of the counseil de la science et de la technologie. He was also a professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal and at the Université de Montréal. AT&T Canada Corp. has named John MacDonald as president and COO, effective November 27. MacDonald succeeds Harry Truderung, who has decided to move on to pursue other interests. Prior to joining AT&T, MacDonald served as president and CEO of Leitch Technology Corp., a provider of products for the broadcasting industry. Before leading Leitch, he spent several years at Bell Canada ultimately becoming president and COO in 1998. "John MacDonald’s appointment is a clear statement to our employees, our customers and our competitors that we are gearing up to emerge as a strong, independent and highly competitive force in the Canadian telecom marketplace," AT&T CEO John McLennan said in a news release. Former Microcell Telecommunications Inc. executive Alex Brisbourne has joined CablesEdge Software Inc. as its executive VP business development. He has extensive management experience in product development, service deployment and carrier-grade IP product delivery. At Microcell, he was VP and GM. Brisbourne was also president of Gandalf International, a subsidiary of Gandalf Technologies Inc., which had annual revenue of $65 million. International Datacasting Corp. has appointed Marc Santerre as its CFO, effective December 2. He has more than 16 years financial experience, having most recently held the CFO position at Vistar Telecommunications and GPC Government Policy Consultants. Santerre replaces Phillip Bolger who announced his departure from the firm last month, as reported in Report on Wireless (RoW, Nov. 25/02). John Winterburn, a veteran of the United Kingdom’s mobile communications industry, has joined the Advisory Committee of Contec Innovations. With more than 20 years experience, he will be invaluable as the company continues to develop its technology strategy and its European business development plan. Winterburn is most known for designing systems that eventually became the national paging networks of Vodafone Paging. For the last two years, he led the development and delivery of messaging and mobile messaging services as group chief designer with Vodafone UK’s product development group. 3Com Canada has made two key appointments. Trent Ready has been named voice solutions specialist and Gavin Fick has been appointed national channel sales manager. Ready will be responsible for providing advice, regional planning and customer support in the deployment of the company’s IP telephony technology. Fick will oversee 3Com Canada’s channel strategies and partner relationships. Research in Motion Ltd.’s founder Mike Lazaridis has been appointed the new chancellor of the University of Waterloo. He succeeds Val O’Donovan, chair of COM DEV International. Lazaridis donated $100 million to the university to assist in the formation of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Rick Giel, a former Rogers Wireless Inc. executive, has been named CFO and a member of the board of directors of Canada NewsWire. At Rogers, he served as VP and GM of the messaging and data business. Prior to that, Giel was VP finance for Rogers Cantel Paging Inc. and Maclean Hunter Communications Inc. Camarillo CA-based Salem Communications has retained Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP public policy advisor Sean Moore to obtain federal approval to delete an unused Thunder Bay ON AM radio frequency. Salem, which broadcasts Christian and family radio programming over a network of 85 stations in 35 markets in the U.S., is seeking to boost the power of one of its stations on the American side. The move would require Industry Canada approval due to cross-border agreements since the increased power could interfere with a Canadian operator at the same frequency. Thomas Wheeler, president and CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA), has announced that he will leave the U.S. wireless lobby group a year from now. He has been with the CTIA for nearly a dozen years. Wheeler’s contract expires next year and required him to give one-year’s notice to the CTIA’s board of directors. He has also been named president of the board of directors of the Foundation for the National Archives. James Walters has been appointed VP of gaming and wagering at Diversinet Corp., a provider of mobile commerce security infrastructure. Walters is considered an expert in the lottery and gaming industry with more than 30 years experience in the field. He brings in-depth business operations knowledge and will be instrumental in helping to validate the company’s product. Prior to joining Diversinet, Walters founded International Totalizer Systems Inc. and helped build it into a worldwide supplier in the parimutuel wagering industry. Paul Vincett has joined Wilfrid Laurier University’s School of Business and Economics as chair of its management of technology enterprises program. Vincett has extensive experience in the private sector in the areas of performance, management and financing of applied research (see brief in this issue for more information on the creation of the chair).
