National Selection Committee of Broadband Pilot ProgramOn December 17, Industry minister Allan Rock released the names of the members of the National Selection Committee for the Broadband for Rural and Northern Development pilot program. Microcell Telecommunications Inc. has announced that James Healy and Dirk Mosa have resigned from the company’s board of directors. Both are representatives from T-Mobile USA Inc. (formerly Voice-Stream Wireless Corp.), which is a major Microcell shareholder. About a month ago, T-Mobile wrote down its investment in Microcell and it is likely for this reason Healy and Mosa resigned from the board. T-Mobile currently holds approximately 15% of Microcell’s outstanding shares. Malcolm Collins has been appointed president of Nortel Networks Corp.’s enterprise networks division, effective immediately. He has been charged to lead the struggling unit against the likes of Cisco Systems Inc., a major player in this space. A 10-year veteran of Nortel, he will be responsible for all elements of the enterprise networks division, including business development, products, marketing and sales. Most recently, Collins served as the senior executive for the United Kingdom and northern European region where he was responsible for financial and customer activities. Spectrum Signal Processing Inc. has restructured its management team as part of the Burnaby BC-based firm’s reorganization plans. As a result, Marty McConnell, VP finance, and Doug Johnson, VP ebusiness, operations and quality assurance, are both leaving the company. McConnell, who has been with the company for 10 years, decided to step down and will be replaced by Brent Flichel, the current director of finance. Flichel will officially take over on January 1, 2003. There is no word on whether there will be a replacement for Johnson, who joined the company in 1989. SIRIT Technologies Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of iTech Capital Corp., has reorganized along its three key business lines and appointed industry veterans to lead each unit. Mike Breslin, director of tolling solutions, will lead the company’s Electronic Toll and Traffic Management business unit. The Transportation Mobility Solutions business unit will now be headed by Michael Bigbee in his capacity as area VP. Don Lalloy has been appointed director of RF solutions and will be responsible for the RF Solutions business unit. Federal Communications Commission commissioner Kathleen Abernathy has announced that Jennifer Manner will join her staff as senior counsel. Manner will officially take over her position on January 13, 2003. She is currently director of international alliances at WorldCom Inc. From 1996 to 1999, she served as associate counsel in WorldCom’s legal department. Manner previously worked at the FCC as attorney-advisor in the commission’s common carrier bureau. The board of directors of Andrew Corp. has announced its intent to name Ralph Faison as president and CEO. The official announcement is expected to be made at the company’s annual general meeting to be held in February 2003. Faison is currently Andrew’s president and COO. He will succeed Floyd English, who will continue as Andrew chair until February 2004. The Wireless Communications Association (WCA) will honour Roger Marks, a pioneer in the broadband wireless standardization field, next month at its Ninth Annual Technical Symposium and Business Expo. Marks will receive the WCA’s Individual Governmental Vision Award. He will be recognized for his efforts in promoting standards for broadband wireless as a way to increase interoperability resulting in lower costs associated with broad system deployment. Of his many past activities, he founded in 1998 the IEEE 802.16 working group on broadband wireless access standards. Joe Connelly has been appointed VP of sales and marketing of Tundra Semiconductor Corp., moving from his previous position of VP sales. He will be responsible for leading the company’s sales, marketing and product management teams worldwide. Connelly joined Tundra in October 2000 as director of sales and entered his previous role in February 2001. Prior to joining the company, he held business development and marketing positions at Motorola and Microchip Technology.
