Beverly Brooks, Tim Casgrain and Stuart Smith have been appointed to the board of directors of Look Communications Inc. The appointments follow resignations from the board of Mark Hemingway, Jean Noelting and Chip Vallis. Brooks heads her own communications company and specializes in public, media and government relations. From 1995 to 1998, she was government relations and chief economist at Bell Mobility. Casgrain is chair of Skyservice, and Smith is president and CEO of Oxford Properties. Sally Moyer Kent has been named CFO of Persona Inc., effective February 17. She will be located in Toronto and will be responsible for all aspects of finance, accounting and treasury for the Newfoundland-based cable company. Her focus will be on investor relations and corporate development. Moyer Kent worked with Rogers Communications Inc. from 1991 to 1997, beginning as director of financial planning and investor relations, and advancing to CFO of Rogers Cablesystems Ltd. She joined Nelvana Limited in 1997 as senior VP and CFO, and left the company after assisting in the company’s $554-million sale to Corus Entertainment Inc. As speculated, John Tory is giving up his position as chair and CEO of Rogers Cable Inc. to enter the Toronto mayoralty race. Edward Rogers was named president and co-CEO of Rogers Cable, effective February 7. Tory has begun the process of transitioning his duties and will remain as chair and co-CEO until he is ready to devote his efforts full-time to his campaign. As well, Dean MacDonald, senior VP of government relations at Rogers Communications Inc. and interim senior VP of sales and marketing at Rogers Cable, has been appointed executive VP and COO of Rogers Cable. Kieron Dowling has been named president and CEO of Cygnal Technologies Corp., succeeding company founder, vice-chair and CEO Doug Young, effective March 3. Dowling is currently president and COO of the Oshawa-based company. Stuart Snyder has been appointed president and CEO of Cinar Corp. Previously, he was president and CEO of WWF Entertainment. Jacques Bensimon, government film commissioner and chair of the National Film Board of Canada, is a member of the 12-person steering committee of Canadian Heritage minister Sheila Copps’ forum on diversity and culture. Senator Laurier LaPierre, former chair of Telefilm Canada, and Cynthia Reyes, a former CBC employee who left the public broadcaster in 2000 to form ProMedia International Inc., a production and consulting company with a special interest in diversity, are also on the steering committee. Claude Doucet has been appointed director of broadcasting analysis at the CRTC. Previously, he was director of distribution and competitive policy. Doucet replaces Robert Ramsay, who was in the position on an interim basis (CCR, March 28/02). Jacques Camerlain leaves Canal Évasion, where he was director of programming and operations. His position was cut in a restructuring after Serdy Direct Inc. bought out Bell Globemedia’s share in the French-language specialty TV channel. Kenneth Whyte has been appointed to the newly created position of deputy publisher of the National Post, which is owned by CanWest Global Communications Corp. He has been editor-in-chief since the paper’s inception in 1998. He will continue to serve in that role, while assuming his new responsibilities. Jim Orban has been named general manager of the Ottawa Citizen, which is owned by CanWest Global Communications Corp. He takes over from Gordon Fisher, who has been acting as interim publisher of the newspaper since June 2002. William Chambers has been appointed VP of communications at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp./Radio-Canada. In Memory Peter Nielsen died February 3 after a six-month battle with cancer. He was most recently VP of government and industry relations with Shaw Communications Inc. Nielsen was a long-time subscriber of CCR.
