Marc O’Sullivan joins the CRTC as executive director of broadcasting, effective April 14. Currently, he is director general of broadcasting policy and innovation at Canadian Heritage. Previous to joining Canadian Heritage, he worked at the Privy Council Office (PCO) from 1989 to 2000. Among the positions he held at the PCO were assistant clerk of the Privy Council, executive director of Strategic Projects Unit, and executive assistant to the clerk of the Privy Council. Tony Lacombe and Jacques Langlois have been acting as alternating executive directors since December when Jean-Pierre Blais, who held the position, left the CRTC for Canadian Heritage (CCR, Dec. 5/02). Hélène Fortin, a chartered accountant, has been named to the board of directors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Since 1989, Fortin has been an associate at Hébert, Lussier & Associés. She has been on the boards and committees of other professional and community organizations including the Fondation du Musée and the Canadian Cancer Society. CHUM Ltd. has established a new management structure for the company under a newly formed management operating committee, consisting of Paul Ski, Stephen Tapp and David Kirkwood. Ski, formerly VP and general manager of CFUN-AM/CKST-AM/CHQM-FM Vancouver, becomes executive VP of radio. Tapp, formerly VP and general manager of CHUM’s Citytv Toronto, has been named executive VP of television. Kirkwood, formerly VP of sales and marketing at CHUM Television, becomes executive VP of sales and marketing for radio and television. The management operating committee and CHUM Ltd. VP of finance Taylor Baiden will manage the day-to-day operations of the company. More members will be added to the committee later. The change in management structure replaces the position of CHUM Radio president, which had been held by Jim Waters, and CHUM Television president, which had been held by Jay Switzer. Switzer was appointed president and CEO of CHUM Ltd. late last year, as company founder Allan Waters announced he was stepping down as chair and president (CCR, Dec. 5/02). The change in management structure and appointments take effect immediately. David Drybrough has been appointed to the board of directors of CanWest Global Communications Corp. A chartered accountant by training, he has been a consultant with Winnipeg-based Gendis Inc. since his retirement in 1997 from the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, then known as Coopers & Lybrand. It is anticipated that he will serve on the board’s audit committee. He fills a spot vacated by the departure from the board of National Post publisher Peter Viner. The appointment of Drybrough brings to six the number of independent board members. There are 10 members of the board in total. Robert Seufferheld joins Toronto-based Leitch Technology Corp. as VP of sales for the Americas. As well, Laura Whitaker has been named as VP of marketing communications. Seufferheld will run the Americas sales and distribution network, while Whitaker will oversee branding and outbound marketing communications worldwide. Seufferheld has held sales management positions at the Grass Valley Group and SeaChange International. Whitaker has worked on several product launches, including the Tektronix Profile video server, Sony’s high-definition HDCAM series, and start-up company Omneon Video Networks’ server product. Marie Comeau and George Elliott Clarke have been named as members of the Canada Council of the Arts. Comeau, an employment support services case worker for the Nova Scotia Community Services Department since 1997, was host and producer of a radio show and an actor in the 1976 National Film Board film La Cabane. Clarke teaches English literature at the University of Toronto. François Messier has been appointed general manager of news at Télévision Quatre Saisons. Cindy Jewitt joins B.F. Lorenzetti & Associates Inc. (BFL) as account executive to its Ontario office entertainment division. She will work with David Goldsmith and Joanne Oake. BFL is an insurance broker. Rynée Pye has left her position as publicist for Independent Film Channel to become a publicist for Salter Street Films Productions. Both entities are owned by Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. Calven Iwata has left Cygnal Technology Corp., where he was senior VP and CFO. The company, a provider of communications network services, noted in a media release that his departure was "related to the ongoing development of the management team at Cygnal" under the leadership of new president and CEO Kieron Dowling. Bryan Hills, currently VP of shared services, will act as interim CFO until a replacement is named. Hills is responsible for the day-to-day corporate and administrative services of the company, including accounting, treasury, facilities and information technology.
