Cygnal Technologies Corp. has announced the departure of Calven Iwata as senior VP and CFO effective immediately. Iwata’s departure is part of the ongoing management team development under new president and CEO Kieron Dowling. Iwata will be replaced on an interim basis by Bryan Hills. Currently VP of shared services, Hills has more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry having held a number of senior level financial and operations positions with the likes of Mobile Computing Corp., S&P Data Corp., Geotek Communications Canada and Shaw Mobilecomm, among others. Jeff Lawson has been appointed to Wireless Matrix Corp.’s board of directors. Lawson is currently a partner in the corporate securities group at Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer LLP. His primary focus at the law firm is on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. He is the director of a number of public and private companies and was recently recognized as one of the top 40 lawyers under the age of 40. Leonard Brody has joined the CATAAlliance. He began his work with CATAAlliance last month. Brody, co-author of bestseller Innovation Nation, is currently CEO of Ipreo, a new online private equity research firm. Versatel Networks Inc. has made several key appointments to its board of directors, which are to help chart a new path for the company going forward. New appointments include John MacDonald, president and COO of AT&T Canada; Paul Butcher, president and COO of Mitel Networks; and Eric Goodwin, president and CEO of klocwork. According to Versatel, these appointments will strengthen the company’s operational management structure to deploy new and enhanced voice services for call centre, pre-paid, conferencing, mobile and other applications. MacDonald is a well-known figure in Canadian telecommunications having served as president of Bell Canada, Leitch Technology Corp. and NBTel. Butcher helped lead Mitel in its transition from traditional PBX to converged communications. Goodwin is recognized as a serial entrepreneur having built companies like Fulcrum Technologies and FloNetwork. Myer Bentob, former head of Mitec Telecom Inc., has resigned from the company’s board of directors. In September 2002, he resigned the CEO position and then in November 2002 resigned as chair of the board. With Rajiv Pancholy now holding the reins as president and CEO, the company is undertaking a major restructuring of its manufacturing operations. VenGrowth Capital Partners Inc. has announced that Graham McBride has joined the venture capital firm as a general partner. He will be charged with VenGrowth’s mezzanine debt financing activity targeting deals between the $3-million and $7.5-million range. McBride joins the VC firm with more than 17 years experience. Voice Mobility International Inc. has appointed Don Calder as chair of the board of directors. Calder is a veteran in the telecommunications industry with nearly 30 years experience having served as CEO of BC Telecom from 1997 to 1999. He was also executive VP of network and operations, and Group VP marketing and development with Stentor Resource Centre Inc. Calder is currently vice-chair of the board of directors and the executive committee of the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corp. The Yankee Group has added Wally Swain as a principal analyst for the research firm’s Latin American research practice. He will be based in Bogota, Colombia. Swain has considerable experience in the mobile telecommunications and pre-paid wireless services markets, as well as strategic planning and organizational design, alliance management and costing and statistical modeling. American Technology Research Inc. (AmTech) has added three research analysts to enhance the company’s capabilities in providing independent research advice. Joining AmTech will be Scott Phillips, Rob Sanderson and James Alexander. Phillips, previously with Merrill Lynch, will cover infrastructure and application software. Sanderson, who joins from Banc of America Securities, will cover broadband and media. Alexander, who joins from C.E. Unterberg Towbin, will cover the communications and consumer semiconductor sectors.
