Bryan Hills, VP of shared services at Cygnal Technologies Corp., is acting as interim CFO following the departure of senior VP/CFO Calven Iwata. Hills has worked at the Oshawa ON company for a year after previously serving at Bell Mobility Paging, Shaw Mobilecomm, and Mobile Computing Corp. Encore Networks Inc. has expanded its operations by opening a Canadian sales office in Ottawa. John Craig, a veteran of CrossKeys Systems Corp. and Nortel Networks Corp., is the director of Canadian sales & business development. John Glass has been named VP marketing and business development for Halifax’s Core Networks. Glass, who has experience at Motorola Broadband, Tektronix and Taqua Systems, will work out of the firm’s California office. Former BC Telecom CEO Don Calder has been appointed chair of Voice Mobility Inc. He also worked at the Stentor Resource Centre Inc. and is currently vice-chair of the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corp. University of Ottawa technology law professor Michael Geist has been awarded a Canadian research chair in Internet and ecom law as part of a new federal government initiative. The chair will be endowed with $500,000 over five years. Geist practises law with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP and writes for the Toronto Star. Jacques Mallette is the new CFO at Quebecor Inc. The former president/CEO of Cascades Groupe Carton Plat inc. succeeds Claude Helie, who shifts to the CFO’s job at subsidiary Quebecor World Inc. Gary Forsee has been appointed CEO of Sprint Inc. following an arbitrator’s decision permitting him to leave BellSouth (NL, Feb. 24/03). As part of the settlement, Forsee must agree not to reveal corporate secrets of his former employer. Australia’s Paul Twomey will become the first non-American to be president/CEO of ICANN, the Internet naming group. The 41-year-old former government official replaces Stuart Lynn, who announced his retirement last year. Fortinet, a firewall firm based in Santa Clara CA, has named Bernie Vierich as its VP of worldwide customer support. He previously worked at Canadian companies Kanatek Technologies and Mitel Networks. Carol Stephenson has been named dean of the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. She is a former president/CEO of Lucent Technologies Canada (NL, Feb. 24/03) and an alumna of Stentor Resource Centre Inc. and Bell Canada. BCE Inc. chair Richard Currie has been appointed chancellor of the University of New Brunswick. He will be installed as chancellor of his alma mater in May. FCC commissioner Jonathan Adelstein has named Barry Ohlson as his wireless legal advisor and Johanna Mikes as media advisor. Both have experience at law firms and at the FCC, Ohlson in the wireless telecommunications bureau and Mikes in the common carrier (now called wireline competition) bureau. In addition, Ohlson has worked at Winstar Communications and Mikes served as legislative counsel for an American congressman.
