Harry Connors is retiring as VP public affairs at Aliant Inc. He tells Network Letter that after June 30 he will become "a man of leisure and golf, which I hope are synonymous." His replacement is Robyn Tingley, currently director of public affairs. Miriam Tuerk is the new president of ebusiness solutions at BCE Emergis. A five-year veteran of the company, she had been acting as president since December and is the former senior VP sales. Telecom Ottawa has named Dale Theoret as director of network operations. He is an alumnus of AT&T Canada. David Horsley has been named senior VP/CFO at Cygnal Technologies Corp. He had been senior VP/corporate secretary at Canadian General Capital Ltd., a major Cygnal shareholder. The former interim CFO, Bryan Hills, becomes VP finance (NL, Mar. 24/03). Centennial College business/IT professor Tom Kane has won a 2003 Technology Innovation Award for his work in online learning. Other recipients of the award, which are given by the Learning Partnership, are Janet Murphy, manager of the Advanced Broadband Enabled Learning project at York University and the York region district school board; Todd Hitchcock, the technical and information services officer for the Durham district school board; Peter Krolewski, a teacher in the Dufferin-Peel Catholic district school board; Keith Johnson, IT superintendent at the Halton district school board; and the academic services team at the Toronto district school board. The Canadian Cable Television Association has elected its board of directors for 2003-04. Representing Rogers Communications are president/CEO Ted Rogers and Dean MacDonald, executive VP/COO Rogers Cable Inc. Jim Shaw, CEO of Shaw Communications Inc., and Ken Stein, senior VP, corporate & regulatory affairs, represent the western cableco. From the east are Louis Audet, president/CEO of Cogeco Inc., and John Bragg, president of EastLink Cable Systems. Regional representatives are Jacques Perron, GM of Coopérative de Câblodistribution de l’Arrière-Pays (eastern district); Warren Ritchie, GM of Norcom Cablevision Ltd. (central); and David Baxter, president/CEO of Westman Communications Group (western). MSN.CA has appointed Ruth D’Souza as director of marketing. She was most recently GM of the MSN Home and Autos division and has past experience at Rogers Cablesystems, @Home Canada, and the T. Eaton Ltd. Co. D’Souza replaces Jill Schoolenberg, who becomes director of MSN’s business group lead, Windows client. The 2002 National Business Book Award was given to Douglas Hunter for The Bubble and the Bear: How Nortel Burst the Canadian Dream. The author, whose book was published by Doubleday Canada, receives $10,000 for his work. David Shpigler, president of The Shpigler Group consulting firm, has joined the United Telecom Council as director of research. The UTC has also promoted Karnel Thomas from director of member services to VP member services. The group has elected three new senior board members: Jim Stahl, lead-mobile communications at PacifiCorp, becomes chair; Ken Campbell, senior network consultant at American Electric Power, is vice-chair; and Jeff Selman, manager of telecom & protection engineering for Tri-State Generation and Transmission serves as secretary/treasurer. Canadian representatives on the board are Richard Bertolo, director of carrier relations for Hydro One; Murray Matiowsky, manager of communications for Manitoba Hydro; and Dave Dobbin, executive VP at Telecom Ottawa. British Telecom is planning to expand its operations in France and has made two appointments to further that ambition. Olivier Campenon becomes country manager, after serving as president/CEO of Siris, the French subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. He has also worked for T-Systems France and AT&T’s European division. BT’s new sales and marketing manager is François Eloy. The former VP international sales for France Télécom’s Transpac has experience at Equant. Kenneth Barr, who worked for CTI, Lucent Canada, AT&T, TTS, Nortel, BCSI and Bell Canada, died on June 2. The 53-year-old is survived by his wife Trish and two sons.
