The three members of Persona Inc.’s special committee investigating the best options for the sale of the cableco are Doug Kirk and Terry Lyons, independent directors of the company, and Thomas Pippy from Burns Fry. They will try to get the best price for the company. Kirk will serve as chair of the special committee. Denis Carmel has been named permanently to the position of director general of communications at the CRTC. He has held the position in an acting manner since October 2001. Before that, he worked at the CRTC for about four years as manager of media and Parliamentary relations. Nancy Chapelle has been appointed the new managing director of TVO. Her priorities include adding an educational focus while representing the diversity of the province and increasing the Ontario perpective in all of TVO’s programming. She comes to TVO from the independent production company Catalyst Entertainment, where she was president. The Canadian Cable Television Association has elected its board of directors for 2003-04. Representing Rogers Communications Inc. are president and CEO Ted Rogers and Dean MacDonald, executive VP and COO of Rogers Cable Inc. Jim Shaw, CEO of Shaw Communications Inc., and Ken Stein, senior VP, corporate and regulatory affairs, represent the western cableco. From the east are Louis Audet, president and CEO of Cogeco Inc., and John Bragg, president of EastLink Cable Systems. Regional representatives are Jacques Perron, GM of Coopérative de Câblodistribution de l’Arrière-Pays (eastern district); Warren Ritchie, GM of Norcom Cablevision Ltd. (central); and David Baxter, president and CEO of Westman Communications Group (western). MSN.CA has appointed Ruth D’Souza as director of marketing. She was most recently GM of the MSN Home and Autos division and has past experience at Rogers Cablesystems, @Home Canada, and the T. Eaton Ltd. Co. D’Souza replaces Jill Schoolenberg, who becomes director of MSN’s business group lead, Client Windows. Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. CEO Michael MacMillan has been named president of the Canadian Chapter of the International Institute of Communications. He replaces André Bureau, who recently became chair of Microcell. Janet Yale was re-elected for the third consecutive term as chair of the Canadian Television Fund during the Banff Television Festival. The new CTF board of directors are Julia Keatley of Keatley Films, Ira Levy of Breakthrough Films and Television, Michel Carter of TQS, Peter Moss of Corus Entertainment, Bill Mustos of CTV, Richard Gustin of SCN, Slakow Klymkiw of the CBC, Susan Peterson from Canadian Heritage, actor/director Paul Gross, and Louis Paquin from the Alliance des producteurs francophone du Canada. Ongoing members include Laszlo Barna, Doug MacLeod, Michael Wernick, Trina McQueen, Cecile Chevrier, Steve Smith, Daniel Gourd, René Bourdages, Paul Gratton, Loren Mawhinney and Beth Haddon. Montreal-based Cinar Corp. has named Richard Genest as CFO. He has previously worked in finance at Alcan Inc. Canadian Television Fund senior VP Louise Baillargeon is retiring. Laszlo Barna, executive producer of Barna-Alper Productions, is the new chair of the board of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association. It is a two-year term. New to the 26-person CFTPA board for a two-year term are Daniel Cross from Montreal-based Eye Steel Film, Christine Haebler from Vancouver-based Crescent Entertainment, and Alexandra Raffé of Toronto-based Savi Media Inc. At Rogers Media, Derek Berghuis, VP and general manager at 680 News, has been given additional duties and has been appointed general manager of the FAN 590. FAN 590 sports and news director Scott Metcalfe is now news director for 680 News. As well, Julia Adam, former program director at KISS 92.5, has been appointed general manager and program director of CHFI. David Dembroski joins the entertainment and media law firm Stohn Hay LLP as partner. Kevin Newman, anchor and executive director of the evening network news program Global National, has signed a new multi-year contract with CanWest Global Communications Corp. and the Global Television Network. Dufferin Gate Productions was awarded the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the Banff Television Festival. Mary Kahn, senior VP of TV production-series at Alliance Atlantis Communications, received the CFTPA-Kodak Lifetime Achievement Award. Stéphane Lemay, VP of legal and corporate affairs at Look Communications Inc., has left the company. No replacement has been named. At the Banff Television Festival, Mila Aung-Thwin and Daniel Cross of Montreal-based Eye Steel Film won the top prize of $50,000 in the CTV Canadian Documart pitch. Their project is called George, from Athens to Beijing.
