Eugène Marquis has resigned as president/CEO of Vidéotron Télécom ltée. A statement from parent company Quebecor hinted that disputes between it and minority shareholder the Carlyle Group contributed to Marquis’ departure. Karen Sheriff has assembled the team that will be working for her as president of Bell Canada’s small and medium business unit (NL, May 20/03). Kris Emmet, a 13-year veteran of Bell, is VP dedicated sales for Ontario. Her opposite number for Quebec is Claude Rousseau. He has spent 20 years at the telco. Greg Root, the new VP mass channels, worked part-time for Bell while attending university. He joined the telco full-time one year ago after working at other firms for eight years. Elizabeth Tropea continues as VP public access and president of Bell Conferia, titles she has held since November 2001. The former VP Sympatico ISP, Patricia Brady Tremaine, is now senior VP small and medium business segment and product marketing. She has been with Bell since 1996. Sanae Takahashi is the VP small and medium business segment marketing. In her eight years at Bell, she has worked for Bell Mobility and as VP business ISP and e-business. Howard Morton, the former executive director for new ventures at BCE, is the new GM product development and management. Norm Berberich, formerly director of external communications for the public affairs division, is handling similar duties with the SME group. He has been with Bell since 1999. After serving as interim secretary general of the CRTC for 13 months, Diane Rhéaume has officially taken over the job. She has worked at the regulator for 30 years. Philippa Lawson will become executive director of the University of Ottawa’s new Internet Policy and Public Interest Law Clinic in September, working with law professor Michael Geist. She had been senior counsel of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre. The former CFO of Craig Wireless Systems, Darcy Kindred, is now CFO at Technovision Systems Inc. The Vancouver ISP is in the midst of a merger with PCNet International (NL, Apr. 22/03). Iain Harris has resigned as chair of the audit committee for Telus Corp. Harris, who has been on the Telus board since 1997, is currently fighting insider trading charges unrelated to the telco (NL, June 2/03). Former CRTC chair Françoise Bertrand will be the new president/CEO of the Federation of Quebec Chambers of Commerce. She starts her new duties next month. Vonage Holdings Corp. has appointed Michael Tribolet as executive VP of operations. He had been VP operations at Dialpad Communications before joining Vonage, which recently announced plans to expand into Canada. Peter Cullen is the new chief privacy strategist for Microsoft Corp. The former corporate privacy officer of the Royal Bank of Canada replaces Richard Purcell, who resigned earlier this year. The Federal Communications Commission has named Julie Veach as assistant chief of the wireline competition bureau’s competition policy division. She has been with the FCC since January 2001, after working at a law firm and clerking on the U.S. Court of Appeals. Because she is on parental leave until the fall, Jeremy Miller will be acting assistant chief until Veach’s return. Miller has been with the regulator since March 2001. U.S. Representative Chip Pickering has turned down the job of president of the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association to remain in Congress. The Mississippi Republican had been a leading contender to replace CTIA boss Thomas Wheeler, who is retiring.
