Janet Yale is now the executive VP, government and regulatory affairs, for Telus. She has just completed a four-year stint as president/CEO of the Canadian Cable Television Association and has worked for AT&T Canada. Jim Peters, who had been watching Ottawa for the western ILEC (NL, Feb. 10/03), will help with the transition before returning to Vancouver. Fred Crooks has been named senior VP, general counsel and corporate secretary for Aliant Inc. The partner at Halifax law firm Cox Hanson O’Reilly Matheson will move to the telco in mid-October. Paul Kent has been appointed senior VP of Aliant and COO of its xwave subsidiary. He comes to the BCE Inc. company after spending several years at Fujitsu Consulting (Canada). Axia NetMedia has moved John Maynard to the CFO position. He had been president of Netricom, which Axia sold earlier this year (NL Update, Aug. 25/03). The Calgary-based firm has appointed former senior financial officer Peter McKeown as VP corporate development. This is a new position. Terry Walsh is now president of Cisco Systems Canada. He had been managing director for Australia and New Zealand for the equipment manufacturer. Walsh replaces Pierre-Paul Allard, who becomes VP worldwide enterprise marketing at the Cisco head office in California. Agilent Technologies Canada Inc. has named Lawrence Loo as president/GM. Loo began working for Hewlett Packard in 1987 and shifted to Agilent when HP spun the division off in 1999. He replaces Alan Lolacher. Malcolm Collings has resigned as COO of Ignition Point Technologies but will remain as an advisor to the Vancouver company. CEO Peter van der Gracht will assume Collings’ duties at the broadband firm. TigerTel Communications Inc. has announced a change in its board of directors. Peter Shurman, president of Universal Teleresponse Corp., joins the board. Universal was purchased by TigerTel in February. Timothy MacDonald, president/CEO of Ideal Supply Co. Ltd., was also elected to the board. The pair replaces Brayl Copp and Gordon Patton, who have resigned from the TigerTel board. Michael Cytrynbaum has been named president/CEO of Look Communications Inc. He had been acting as interim head since the resignation of Paul Lamontagne last spring. Jim Reichert will become VP research and international for the B.C. Institute of Technology on October 1. He had been president/CEO of the Innovation and Science Council of B.C. and has worked for various research bodies in Manitoba. He has also done research for the Department of National Defence. Michael Graham, VP of investment at GrowthWorks, is leaving the VC firm. As a result, he has resigned as the company’s representative on the board of Linmor Inc. (NL, Sept. 2/03). Clarence Chandran has resigned from the board of Alcan Inc., citing concerns about his new role with Alcan strategic partner CGI Group Inc. (NL, Sept. 16/03). He is being replaced by Christine Morin-Postel, formerly of the Suez Group and la Société Générale de Belique. Michael Geist, a professor at the University of Ottawa, received the public leadership award at the recent IWAY awards sponsored by CANARIE Inc. Other winners include Edward Brown, executive director of North Network, and Robert Gamble, president of Service New Brunswick (application of technology); Michael Furdyk, director of technology for TakingITGlobal (community service); Wade Hong of Carleton University and Corrie Kost of Vancouver’s TRIUMF (new technology development); and the Canadian Hearing Society (adaptive technology). Former Symantec Corp. VP Amit Yoran is the new cybersecurity chief in the Department of Homeland Security in the United States. The cofounder of Riptech Inc. expects to begin his duties within a few weeks. His job effectively replaces the position held by Richard Clarke, who resigned earlier this year (NL, Feb. 10/03). Telefonica has announced the elimination of the COO position following the resignation of Fernando Abril-Martorell. His duties have been assumed by Cesar Alierta, chair of the Spanish telco.
