Felix (Fil) Fraser has been appointed as a member of Telefilm Canada. Fraser, an adjunct professor of communications studies at Athabasca University, is past president and CEO of VisionTV. He also founded the Alberta Film Festival in 1974, and the Banff Television Festival in 1979. Frank McKenna has been named as interim chair of the board of CanWest Global Communications Corp. He succeeds Israel Asper, who passed away on October 7. As interim chair, he will preside over meetings of the CanWest board of directors and the company’ shareholders. He will have ex-officio membership on all board committees. The terms of CRTC commissioners Cindy Grauer and Andrew Cardozo ended on October 26. Neither one has been reappointed to the regulator. Tim Kist has been appointed as director of marketing at the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. Previously, he was instrumental in launching the first combined two-way wireless high-speed Internet and digital TV wireless TV service in Canada, and led the sales efforts of the third tier launch of new cable channels. He has worked for MTS Communications Inc., Craig Wireless International Inc. and Videon CableSystems Inc. Johnny Michel has been hired as VP of programming, production and promotion for Channel M, Vancouver’s over-the-air ethnic station. He was instrumental in coming up with the station’s on-air look, branding and initial program schedule. Gordon McIvor has been named as chair of the board of directors of the VisionTV Foundation. Betty Steinhauer, founder of a company that provides strategic planning services in marketing and business development, and Steve Thomas, an expert in direct response fundraising, have been appointed members of the board. The foundation is a charitable organization established a year ago to seek gifts and bequests to support new programming initiatives at VisionTV and other broadcast networks. Sportscaster Bruce Barker has returned to Calgary to work in sports at QR77 radio station. He has been the only voice of the Ontario Hockey League’s Mississauga Icedogs since the team’s inception. He last worked in Calgary in 1994, as colour commentator for the Pacific Coast League’s Calgary Cannons baseball club and as sports director at CJAY 92 FM. Sarah Ker-Hornell has been named managing director of FilmOntario, effective immediately. Since 1990, Ker-Hornell has held executive producer roles with various production companies. Noelle Richardson is the new host of VisionTV’s human affairs show, 360 Vision. She began her broadcasting career in 1983 with Toronto’s CFMT-TV and moved to the CBC four years later. Behind the scenes, John Scully has been hired as senior producer at 360 Vision. Actor Leslie Nielsen received an Award of Exellence from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) on October 23 at the Canadian residence of the Consul General in Los Angeles. First presented in 1972, the ACTRA awards celebrating accomplishments in film, radio and television were given out until 1986. ACTRA reinstated the awards this year in a number of its branches in honour of its 60th anniversary. Neilsen’s award recognizes the success of a Canadian performer working in the United States.
