Tyco Telecom wins South American undersea contractTyco Telecommunications has been awarded a contract to upgrade the South American undersea fibre optic network of Telefonica International Wholesale Services. The network has a dozen landing stations in major countries on the continent. Equant expands managed DSL service in EuropeEquant is rolling out its managed DSL service in Belgium, France, Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. It now offers the service in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Universal Access wins telecom analysis deal from United AirlinesUniversal Access Global Holdings Inc. won a contract from United Airlines to study ways to save on telecom bills. The Chicago-based network integrator used its database to determine how United could make savings. Ireland to spend $175 million on broadband rolloutThe Irish government is spending EUR 105 million (about $175 million) on its Broadband Investment Plan. The rollout will affect 350,000 people living in 80 towns in the island nation. KPN looks to expand in Europe, CEO saysKPN CEO Ad Scheepbouwer says his telecom wants to become a larger player in the European marketplace. Already in Germany and Belgium, it is looking at expansion into France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Worldwide equipment market dips slightly from year agoSynergy Research Group of Phoenix says the global market for telecom and networking equipment fell by 4% in the third quarter of 2003, compared with a year previous. The market actually increased 4.6% from Q2 to Q3. Phone calls from spiderhole may have done in SaddamA report in London’s Sunday Times suggests phone calls made by Saddam Hussein may have led to the Iraqi dictator’s capture. The newspaper interviewed Saddam’s wife Samira Shahbandar, who says she received weekly calls from the Iraqi strongman. It has been reported that the coalition forces intercepted those calls, hastening Saddam’s arrest.
