Three more 2300/3500 MHz spectrum auction suitors have dropped out, bringing the total number of withdrawn participants to five. Unique Broadband Systems Inc. had withdrawn from the auction earlier this month (see article here). 2029507 Ontario Inc. also withdrew earlier this month. Richmond Hill ON-based Softrade Inc., which had deposited nearly $1.2 million, withdrew along with two smaller players Arctic Data Systems and Urban Networks Inc. Arctic Data, Yellowknife NT, deposited $5,000 and was likely trying to secure at least a single licence in the North. The company may have realized that it couldn’t compete against the incumbent Northwestel Inc. Urban Networks deposited $60,000, enough money to bid on the G-band Vancouver licence or secure multiple licences on Vancouver Island. It is likely the company realized it wouldn’t win any licences fighting against the large incumbents. Softrade appeared poised to fight for licences in southern Ontario, but probably realized that its chances of securing any properties were slim to none given the population base of the region and the resolve of the large national players to secure their own position.
